Woody Allen is the most overrated director of all time

Let's put the fact that he raped his adoptive daughter when she was 13 and later married her aside, but I have never gotten why he is so beloved aside from pretentious bullshite reasons. I've never found him funny either, with Comedy Central ranking him the 4th greatest stand up comedian of all time, which is insane (I haven't heard any major stand up talking about him since I've been paying attention to the art).
Watching Annie Hall for the first time, I couldn't believe the praise this mediocre pretentious crap received. When I turned it off, you can't help but think "wait, some people consider that the greatest comedy of all time and won the Oscar?" Maybe it's because of my expectations and scrutinizing it given how much I didn't like Woody Allen as a person or film maker before watching it, but I still have to conclude it is the most overrated film made to this day.
Now compare him to another monstrous director called Roman Polanski. Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, and the Pianist are pretty undeniably amazing movies. You can watch those movies and get why he was a beloved filmmaker. But Woody Allen? The guy makes crap, but somehow every blowhard in Hollywood loves the guy despite the fact that he married his adoptive daughter.

There are several other prominent posters on here that agree with me that it's the most overrated film of all time. If I'm going into it seeing AFI rating it the 3rd best comedy of all time, then you better make me laugh, which I really didn't. Maybe it's because I was born a decade later and find works that were influenced by it to be better, but no poster here as far as I've seen has ever listed this in being one of their favorite comedies. It's exceptionally overrated.

Don't care what other posters think, but I personally (strongly) disagree with it being overrated. It's one of my favorite pre-1990 comedies

People hold the great ones in high esteem . . . and ignore the shitty ones.
I will say Midnight in Paris in in my top 20-25 all time though.

It's because he spoke to the self-professed intelligentsia elites in NYC. So, therefore, it was more important than all of your plebian efforts at humor. You see, true comedy isn't meant for such pedestrian goals as making people laugh. Are you a Philistine? No, no. True comedy should make a statement.
(I agree. Watched it years ago. Thought it was pretentious twaffle. You could almost see them saying, "Cut that last line. Someone in Des Moines might laugh.")

I will say that is my favorite of his movies. Not nearly that high for me, but I do see that as a good movie.

Like, that's just your opinion, man, albeit an uninformed one.

I agree. To me, Annie Hall is garbage. I don't understand the love many people have got for it. If I can't get into that I guess it's best for me to stay away from his other movies.

Do not like his movies whatsoever

Just because you don't enjoy something, it doesn't mean that others are enjoying it for pretentious bullshite reasons.
Even if you dismiss Annie Hall (which is still a great watch, and was an amazing film when you saw it in 1977), Allen's track record is fricking amazing.
Blue Jasmine
Midnight in Paris
Radio Days
Hannah and Her Sisters
Zelig
Sleeper
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex
He's far from overrated.

I've never enjoyed Woody's movies either. Have tried to watch several, and just don't like them. People who behave in a neurotic manner don't make me laugh. They irritate me.
It's similar to why I never liked The Office. Bad bosses aren't funny to me.

His book Without Feathers was funny as hell back in the day...don't know if it's funny now but we read it in high school.

It was revolutionary for its time, though. I was never the biggest fan of Woody Allen, but I don't deny his talent, either.
Just not your or my cup of tea - I think that's the fairest assessment we can make here.

For all practical purposes, Seinfeld was a fully realized, reworking of Woody Allen material with the jokes and punchlines put back in.
I'm 100% serious.
