Anyone watch this one yet? From the reviews I've read, it seems to be as I expected - the Critic score on RT is near 100% while the audience score is near 50%...that's usually a tell tale sign.

We watched the first episode. It was okay. Not great, but not terrible. There's potential there, but I doubt we stick with it.

That couldn't possibly have been more predictable

They're not remaking anything. Different family, different city. It's a totally different story told under the umbrella of the Wonder Years brand.

The Wonder Years brand? That makes it totally okay then.

Didn't they basically already do this with Everybody Hates Chris? It's basically the same concept.

Wonder Years itself was copied from A Christmas Story - the format is the setting being in the past and having a narrator.

How I Met Your Mother is another example.

If the show had a different name it wouldn't come off as a woke/blackwashed copy of an existing show. Hangin' With Mr Cooper was Three's Company but they had enough original features for the show to be its own animal.

It was pretty bad
And all the subtle race things is a definite turn off from the daughter wearing the black panther shirt

I'm just curious why non-white people are cool with getting cast-offs and reboots of iconic series that previously starred white folks. POC aren't deserving of new IPs where they aren't forced to deal with hand-me-downs? Is that what you're telling us, Hollywood?

Maybe they just wanted to remake the Wonder Years but didn’t want to show a well functioning white family in 2021.

My wife recorded it, I was doing shite while it was on in the background. I maybe heard 3 minutes of it, race was mentioned about 8 times in that span. I am not watching, tired of that shite, completely fed up with it.

your refusal to be lectured to about your racism (regardless of how "subtly" its done) just proves you are a racist.

If anything, they copied Stand By Me.

I get what you're saying. But it's also a show about a black family in Montgomery in the late 1960s. Are you really surprised by its content? Was race not an issue in that particular setting?

I don't have a problem with that. I may actually be more interested if this show were released 10-20 years ago...(did I already say that in this thread?) but given the context of society today, where we are constantly beaten over the head with racial animosity toward white people...I have no desire to watch a show like this for entertainment. It would just annoy me as it is just more of the same.

I got about ten minutes in and the race stuff wasn't what bothered me, just the characters seemed pretty wooden. I like that Don Cheadle is narrating but some dude narrating isn't going to make it work. Probably recycle "The Wonder Years" name to draw in old fans, could've just named it something else.

The only similarity between Hangin' with Mr. Cooper and Three's Company was a single man living with 2 women. That's it.

I've ragged on current Hollywood's lack of originality lately, but I don't hate this idea.

That doesn't mean this new series will be awesome, it may very well be flat out terrible. However, I'm a general fan of the idea. The Wonder Years are in all of us. And should be. Every person has that sweet spot of their lives, that period growing up where life seems strange , magical, and harshly real, all at the same time.

Hope this does the original series justice.
