Will a regular DVD player play 4K discs?

Straightforward question.
I got a 4K DVD for Christmas but don't have a 4K player (assuming that is a thing similar to Bluray players). The lady told my mother (who bought it) that it would play on regular players, but for some reason I didn't think that was right. And google has given me mixed results, so I figured I'd ask here for a straight answer.
It's Top Gun: Maverick by the way, if you were curious.

I'm fairly certain a regular DVD player couldn't even read a 4K disc.

Wtf is a 4k DVD?

I think it’s the other way around.

You're gonna now have to buy those $40 ultra HD movies

I think that’s a fire hazard

No.

So what you got is the newer 4K UltraHD bluray as opposed to the original bluray disc format (1080p). DVD players and original bluray players cannot play these 4K discs. You'd need a 4K bluray player or a console like a PS5 w/ optical drive.
Now many 4K bluray movies, also come with a 1080p bluray disc too. For Top Gun Maverick, it depends on which version/retailer you got it from. I have this version and you can see on the cover it has both the 4K and the normal blu-ray in it:
Though it sounds like you might not even have a blu ray player. So worst case, your version should have a digital code and you can stream it if you don't have a complatible player.

I believe that's the same one that I received, but will check on that this evening.

Nah, I have an Xbox1 that plays Blurays, but in the bedroom I have a regular DVD player (also have an older HDDVD player in the living room as well, but that doesn't really apply here). I don't buy many DVDs anymore, but when I do I usually buy regular DVDs so that they can be played in all of my players.
My issue here is that apparently the lady told my mother that this DVD will play in "regular DVD players." I told her there's no way she said that, but she was adamant about it...and knowing my mom, she quizzed her to make sure (she also said that this was literally the only DVD they had in several stores they looked at, which caused this issue). I feel like I already knew the answer, but like I said, google gave me mixed results so I figured I'd just ask here. I just didn't want to open the package until I verified it.
So looks like I'll have to try to return it for just a regular DVD. Preciate it.

I'm still holding out for a 4K Beta players to hit the market.

Ok so I checked and my DVD doesn’t have the “Blu-Ray” on the cover like the one you posted. It says “4K Ultra HD” and then “Digital Code,” but no “Blu-Ray.”
Weird.

A lot of times now there are store exclusive versions. I believe the picture he showed is the Walmart exclusive SteelBook.
Pulp Fiction's SteelBook was only available at Best Buy.
The Batman had an exclusive disc at Target.
The Untouchables had a 4k/Blu Ray/DVD/Digital set that was exclusive to Walmart.
So the same movie can be packaged differently depending on where you buy it.

Well does it play or not??

If it came with a digital code you can stream it.
As far as playing a 4k ultra disc. You need a 4k player and a tv/monitor with 3840 x 2160 resolution.
Full hd 1080p is 1920 x 1080

Do you want the disc that bad? You can buy it just digital for half the price.
Hell they were selling both movies in a digital 4k bundle for cheaper than just the one 4k ultra disc version.

I didn’t open it. It’s being returned for a normal DVD.

Yes. I collect DVDs and want it (physically). I don’t need to stream it or “own” it digitally. I don’t buy physical DVDs much anymore but this is one that I do want.
