Why does smoking in movies set in the 40s/50s look so classy?

It’s so trashy in reality and I can’t stand the actual smell of it, but frick they make it look cool in movies set in Americas golden age

That is because the tobacco industry was paying them to make it look cool.

Lighting

But also 90% of the cigs used in movies were herbal and put off way way more smoke than a normal cig

This

When you see smoking in movies today, it's some white trash in a run-down house.

Because actors were actually cool back then. Nobody wants to watch Timothee Chalamet choking on a cigarette that's as big as he is

It’s the body language.

Real smokers try to pull it off (you can see when they try), but they don’t get as many takes as actors and don’t have Hollywood directors coaching them on what do different on the next take.

They dressed better. No dressing like Fetterman, hoochi mama outfits, yoga pants etc.

Telly Savales (Kojak) made cigarettes look cool. Always had one hanging off his bottom lip while talking.

It’s the opposite. The fake herbal cigarettes in movies put off less smoke. LINK

The real reason it probably looks classier is because in all those old movies everyone was dressed up. Women wore gowns and men wore coats and hats. The dressier clothes are actually what made them look more sophisticated.

A lot of it is because Americans in general back then dressed classy, even the working class people.
