the girl (biological female who identifies as female) is a big SVU fan and i had no idea (a) that the show was still on or (b) that it's this cultural phenomenon with women. every once in a while i'll try to be a good bf and send a random SVU gif in a text convo and when i search "svu" in the gifs about half the options are female social media stars talking about svu (on an irl note, Taylor Swift named one of her cats Olivia Benson)

so, what is the fricking deal?

is this like the weird explosion in "true crime" among female audiences mixed in with revenge porn fantasies about sexual assault?

this show is passed the 20 year mark and doesn't appear to be slowing down. and it's a terrible television show. it's repetitive, boring, and (in contrast to the original Law and Order) focuses on the criminal investigation and random twists and turns exponentially more than the legal case (to focus on the star, Olivia Benson)

Damn, i thought you asked why women love "SUV's" so much.

I had some opinions on that as well

Not sure, but I hate Benson's character with a passion. She has zero impartiality. She never doubts the "victim," ever. It really should be her character's downfall in the end, but they'll never write it that way.

Women love the idea that each of them are victims, as well as special. For that matter, most of them love units too.

Mariska Hargitay started an anti-rape/domestic violence non profit organization because of the show. I guess seeing even a TV cop that cares really impacts women who otherwise might feel they have no one on their side when rape/domestic abuse happens?

quote:

“I was also getting letters from viewers who were disclosing their stories of abuse to me. Normally, I’d get letters saying ‘Hi, can I please have an autographed picture,’ but now it was different: ‘I’m 15 and my dad has been raping me since I was 11 and I’ve never told anyone.’”

Hargitay realized she could use her fame created through her work as Det. Olivia Benson on “SVU” to draw attention to the issues surrounding abuse and domestic violence.

Joyful Heart has served more than 13,000 individuals through its healing and wellness programs, connected more than 1.5 million people through its website and online offerings to resources that offer help and effected policy changes in many states.

Well, women tend to like this show due to political reasons. My girlfriend is obsessed with it, and after watching a few episodes of this garbage (specifically the Kavanaugh episode), it’s now off the table for me to watch it. And yes, the posters here are so far right on why women like it.

Old SVU's are real legit. Stabler was the man

Suggest watching the seasons he is in. Show falls fast after he leaves

There's a lot of truth to this people don't like to hear.

It's not ALL women but it's a lot.

Virtually every male serial killer has women sending them love letters.

Remember that Van Der Sloot dude? Was reading his Wikipedia yesterday, he's now married and has fathered a child because of bitches showing up at the prison wanting him. There's a whole blurb about all the love letters he receives.

It's likely something primal and evolutionary, women associating violence with dominance.

Well, they appear to be right about why YOUR GF likes it.

Maybe some women like it because it has a formulaic story structure that they find appealing, rather than a structure that men find appealing?

Or maybe she is secretly fantasizing about Ice-T while you two are going at it, and is trying to cover it up by making it into a political thing?

If she insists on putting on one of his albums during those moments, you might have your answer.

Men on average have far superior taste in film than women do.

Yeah, because she’s dated so many black guys in the past.

She's got a craving man. Best to just let her go to Jamaica for a few days and get it out of her system.

The comments in this thread. Some of y’all are too much.

I like SVU but it’s more of a guilty pleasure watch. And reruns are great background TV when you’re busy doing other things (it was my go to background show for studying). I miss Stabler and the older cast.

I don’t think it’s really deeper than that. I just like some cop procedurals.
