Someone needs to develop a good script first and foremost… If someone does it, you may have a valuable property and can attach a bankable star.

Not even a good script will guarantee success. While the movie did eventually get made, it took Steven Spielberg of all directors over a decade to see his Lincoln biopic come to life. Tony Kushner's script was absolutely out of this world.

The problem is Hollywood is taking fewer and fewer risks on period pieces because they cost a lot of money and aren't guaranteed to make money in return. And a so-called "bankable" star isn't a guaranteer of success anymore either. Audiences have evolved and it's making these studio executives scratch their heads trying to figure out their tendencies.

I'll tell you what had almost no content: the War of 1812

I've got a friend who is a writer (mainly in comedies, several of the Danny McBride/Jody Hill shows), and he's on again/off again working on a script about Lafitte and the Battle of New Orleans in between writing stuff that pays the bills.

It's hard to really sell the American Revolution without giving the framing of the British Empire prior to the French and Indian War, and to really tell the story of the future American leaders/heroes
This caused me to remember the NatGeo show Barkskins that aired a few years ago. I thought we were supposed to get more seasons of that. It was a setting that was leading up to the French and Indian War. Wish we had gotten more of it.

Between this thread and Simcoe getting a mention in the badass villain thread, I’ve started a rewatch of Turn.

I cannot believe it took three pages for someone to bring up John Adams.

The casting alone separates this from all others.

Adams, Franklin, Washington, Jefferson were all perfectly cast.

David McCullough, who wrote the book, is a god damn brilliant writer.

Everyone should read 1776 at least once.

All under the umbrella of divine providence my friend.

There’s a reason no nation then, nor now, has gained its freedom from an empire as large as Britain was at the time. It takes a little help.

we need a remake of the 1776 movie (starring Mr Feeny) but instead using an all black cast where the music is nothing but rap. I'll take full credit for that entirely original idea.

As I mentioned, just the early stages of the war could be a great thriller without being a full on war movie.

Go back and forth between the colonists and their anger towards the crown with the bills they passed vs the picture in England and how they were getting fed up with these “rebels” who dared defy them.

The skirmishes in Lexington and Concord were because Colonists were stashing up arms and cannons in secrecy, the British caught wind of it, Gage wanted to send out a company in the dead of night to go seize them. The Colonists had spies, hence Revere and Dawes heading out to warn them and to warn Hancock and Adams.

The British get to Lexington, a little skirmish breaks out, then they head to Concord when a little bit larger skirmish breaks out. During this time, minutemen across the area are forming in mass across the region. The militia beat them back at Concord, they’re all like “holy shite, we just did that, they’re retreating, I guess it’s on men.”

By the end of the morning there were about 4,000 minutemen in the area. The British were smoked until Percy showed up to save them with another thousand men and 2 cannons.

Regardless, they harass the British all the way back to Boston using Indian tactics of hiding behind walls and trees to pop out and shoot. It pissed off the British so badly they began looting and shooting civilians. It was essentially the “Mogadishu Mile” for the Brits. They were dog tired and exhausted getting shot at all day. We chased them all the way back and began the siege of Boston.

That in itself could be a great film. Build up the tension, the “shot heard round the world” is fired. Colonists leaders are like wow, so it begins, then it ends with like a “here we go, we’re doing this” type ending.

The majority of “battles” were more like skirmishes, but man the drama is there and the tension that built up to them.

shite ima write a script and send it to A24, maybe they’ll have the balls to make it

Yeah, that’s why there aren’t many WWII movies.

That’s what it would be, Martha Washington carrying M-16s under each arm, sinking English ships with her girl power.

But, if Hollywood hates the side that won, like you said, why are there so many WWII movies from the allies perspective?
