She was an absolute controlling bitch before Walt broke bad. I hated her from the scene when she treated her son like a toddler trying on jeans. Bad enough the guy will likely be underestimated daily in his life, worse to have his own Mom do it.

Yeah, that was nearly as bad as killing a woman and running a criminal enterprise.

And it's not Skyler's fault the writers shite the bed from the beginning with the Walt Jr. character. He could have been so interesting - like maybe if he had flirted with breaking bad himself. But nope - 2 dimensional character purely designed to generate cheap sympathy. You should hate the writers.

Nah, I hated her more before she found out about the cooking, when she was so content emasculating Walt on a daily basis and then hating him for being emasculated.

Other than the affair, from what I recall, her actions after she found out were mostly what you’d expect.

Misogyny

Do you people have a word for hating someone just because they’re shitty? Because everything isn’t about a person gender or other identity characteristics, unlike what you people think.

I’m sure plenty of people had a problem with Walt becoming a violent criminal, but the show is constructed to create a protagonist villain, like The Sopranos and others, so it’s natural to expect people would overlook his issues.

This is the correct answer. She used Walt's criminal activities and the safety of Walt Jr. as the complaint for her losing power

We didn't grow to hate Skylar, in fact the show tried very hard to make her sympathetic as time went on. But she was horrible from the beginning. Walt was a giant pussy and she belittled him. Walt didn't change because of money but power and she resented the fact she could no longer walk all over him. Their whole dynamic is not about the money or drugs but a simple power play.

Once Walt became Heisenberg she felt powerless. She was a controlling despot in the home and as much desirable of power and control as Walt. Her way of power was their relationship and the household, Walt's was through meth selling and the typical male way, making money.

So she not only was a hypocrite but emasculated him and she revelled in it. When Walt was no longer the pushover, she not only couldn't handle it but lost her love for him. She married and wanted the guy who walked away from Gray Matter. She never stood by her man unless he was weak.
I think Vince Gilligan is the kind of weak person that thinks he's writing her as a strong woman.
If he's married, his relationship is probably like that, or even worse, his parents were like that.

That's possible. A while back I read a biography by the Everybody Loves Raymond main writer. It was fascinating because his own self loathing so obviously explained the central character.

I’m a woman, and I could not stand Skyler while watching BB.

I thought she was a nag like everyone else. One thing that got to me early on was the thought that she kind of drove Walt to break bad because she did nothing to contribute. Maybe if she would get a job they wouldn’t have been so broke. Maybe if she would do something, anything to financially support her family he wouldn’t feel the need to “set them up” by cooking meth. Then she does get a job and I find out I think even less of her. She’s not working bc she slept with her boss when she worked last time. And now she’s working with him again. Because there are no other jobs in the world.

Also, she smoked while she was pregnant. And I was pregnant with my first when watching the show. So obviously I wanted to throw something at her.

She was a bitch from the get go.

Actually he was the bitch and she was always 100% right to shite on Walt. He was the one who quit on life b/c he was bitter about Grey Matter. He was a brilliant scientist and instead of going out and getting a job at a rival company that would utilize his talents he curled up into a ball and became a teacher at a mediocre public school and then somehow had the gall to be bitter about his situation when it was completely his making. Then when he got his second chance his stupid prideful arse refused to take the job at Grey Matter that would have paid him tons of money and completely covered his cancer treatments with their company insurance.

Instead he decided to be a complete a-hole and get involved in making meth. Not only that, once again his pride got in the way and he wanted everyone to know he was the top dog who made it which is what put a target on his back in the first place. Everything bad that happened to their family was directly b/c Walt was full of himself. Skyler only even got involved with his meth dealings b/c she was trying to make the best of the shite arse situation he put the family in.

I'll take it a step further and even say he straight up deserved to get cheated on by her. It's not like he ever gave a shite about what was best for her or the family so why should she care about his feelings at that point? He even said so himself in the last episode that he did it all for himself b/c he liked the way it made him feel. He didn't do it for the family even though he lied to her and himself about that. It was always all about him. People get confused that he's the hero b/c the show follows Walt but in the end he is the bad guy. He fricks over everyone he interacts with and makes everyone's life worse off than it was before (and that's if they were lucky enough to survive).

I hated Skyler because any screen time spent on her was time not spent on so many other more interesting things.

I watched Breaking Bad to see cartel business. To see drug dealing. To see violence.

Skyler was a nagging middle aged wife. If there were a TV show full of middle aged women disillusioned with their husbands, I wouldn’t watch that show. I have no interest in it.

She simply was a character that wasn’t needed in Breaking Bad. Stick to the drug dealing. That’s all that needed to be focused on. Same thing happened in Sopranos with Carmella. DGAF about any of her storylines whether she’s banging the priest or what not. Stick to mob business. That’s why I watch these shows.

Nagging wives take all the heat off a show (using a wrestling term).

If you watched The Sopranos just for mob shite, you have easily missed the point of one of the greatest shows ever. Impressive.

There’s no “point” to get with art. You either enjoy the show/characters/subject matter, or you don’t.

I personally hated Carmella and AJ. They nearly ruined the show for me. All the time you could have given to Paulie, Johnny Sack, Chris, Uncle Junior - and the writers think seeing Carmella be a nag or AJ be a loser punk son is good TV? Not for me it wasn’t. Didn’t care about any of Tony’s family except at least Meadow was hot. That’s it. Their storylines only detracted from the show IMO. I think that’s why The Wire is held in such a high esteem bc they rarely ever went off tangent with stuff that didn’t matter. It was nearly 100% cop or drug dealing.

And it’s def not misogyny why people hate Skyler. It’s how the character is written. Nagging complainers who aren’t even physically attractive make for bad TV characters. GOT knew how to write engaging female characters like Cersei, Margery etc. Attractive, cunning, manipulative. Same goes for males. Worst male character they had on GOT was king of the betas fat Samwell Tarly. I hated this guy bc all he did was act weak, pitiful, and complain. The equivalent of a Skyler

Marie was at least attractive. I wouldn’t say she was dislikable, but moreso just another pointless forgettable character. Her storyline of being Hank’s wife, and a cleptomaniac didn’t need to be told.

Breaking Bad was about drug dealers, and the cops trying to catch them. I don’t care about the cop (Hank) wife issues. Like who cares? You have all this cartel story you can tell, and you think the audiences cares about Marie stealing things or Skylar just being an all around rotten woman (cheater, nagger, etc).

because just like saying "nickleback is like the worst band eveeerrrrrrrrr omg" it's somehow the cool thing to do and people jsut do it to go along with the crowd. I started a thread on this a few years ago with part of the OP copied here:

" in doing my rewatch (I'm currently a few episodes into season 2, so very early still) I can absolutely see her side of the story. Let's break it down:

-Walt works long hours at a car wash and often stays late. Nothing wrong with this, but it can be tough on a pregnant spouse. Speaking of, they're both aging and didn't plan on this new one so emotions are already on edge from the outset.
-Skyler realizes walt is somehow, someway involved with a druggie loser although she doesn't know how. She (reasonably, in this scenario) assumes he sells walt pot. For a guy that has never touched a drug, I can see how this would be alarming.
-Walt is extremely devious. He is out late, and upon telling her another lie about why he is coming home late from working, she tells him she knows he was fired 2 weeks ago. At this point, skyler knows that walt is not working but is out late and not being forthright, and is also involved with a drug dealer. She has every right to be upset.
-When walt finally comes clean and tells her about the cancer (yet another reason for her to rightfully be upset...hiding this massive secret from her for weeks) she is supportive and finds great medical care. Problem is that walt now has to empty his pension (to her knowledge of course) to pay for it, leaving them basically dead broke.
-grey matter offers him a position. He would actually get to put his smarts to work and make a bundle to boot. He turns it down.
-They go one step further; gretchen and elliot offer to simply pay for the treatment. What a miracle! Walt turns it down.
-they have a baby shower where she gets the jewelry from marie. She isn't happy with it so returns it to the store where she is held by authorities for theft bc of her bitch sister's actions.
-walt continues to be aloof and nearly rapes skyler in the kitchen before she has to make him stop
-after tuco kidnaps walt and jesse, he is missing and nobody knows where he is. It's around 2 days or so and they have literally no clue where he is, he simply vanished without a word
-hank tells skyler that the phone company looked at the records and walt did not receive a phone call when skyler knew he did, thereby informing her he has a 2nd cell phone"

that's only through early season 2 but by then most people have already decided they want to hate her anyway. Now let's get to the 2 other biggies that people point to: cheating and stealing money from the crawlspace.

1- not excusing the cheating at all, I despise cheaters. She was at her wit's end with walt and wanted somethign different so she did it. Not excusing it or permitting it, it happened.
2- taking the crawlspace money. People somehow seem to forget that she did this TO SAVE THEIR FAMILY. People just think "oh how could she do that to walt!? She sucks!" In reality however, she ahd to take that money to pay the IRS because dumb as frick Ted kept thinking everythign was all good with his business that was cooking books for years. if the IRS started snooping harder, which they were about to, they were going ot start looking into the head bookkeeper's personal life and finances. Guess what- that's the Whites! At that point we're looking at extended federal prison time for skyler at a minimum, who knows what else for a worst case scenario.

So there you have it. Skyler acted like *gasp* a regular normal human wife would for pretty much teh first quarter of the show and people don't like it because it's in opposition to the cool badass main character we're rooting for.

1. Nagged about walt hiding secrets in S1-2. When Walt offered to confess, she played the victim card, saying “she’s afraid to know”

2. Pushed walt for the car wash to launder money. Then later played the victim card again, saying “I never asked for any of this”

3. Has a son with cerebral palsy. Smoked while pregnant. Smoked inside the house after baby was born. Smoked inside again at in the last episode when baby was inside the house.

4. Slept with Ted to “get back” at walt, only to comeback for 2nd, 3rd servings.

5. Went out of her way to cook Ted’s books only to use Walt’s money to correct her mistake. Not one time she showed gratitude for walt earning that money.
