Why do many consider Stand By Me an 80s film?

Friends,
Yes, it was filmed in the 80s, but it is set in the 50s. I do not consider it an 80s film.
At the heart of the question is the philosophy of categorizing movies. What makes one movie a 70s film versus a 90s film? In other words, what are essential properties of film defined by a decade, which, by the way, is a stupid definition over which only contemporaries born in the last three quarters of a century seem to obsess? And what are the accidental properties, that is, those properties that are present by accident and do not give the object its essence?
Yours,
TulaneLSU

The most powerful line in the film is spoken in the 80's.

Friend,
I think you may have overlooked the Movie Board founders board.

P.S. Nothing about Stand By Me is an 80s movie except it’s filming date. The essence of the movie is 50s. It is accidental that it was filmed in the 80s. Just as well could have been filmed in the 90s and the essence of the film would be the same. It is a 50s film.

I've always considered Braveheart a 1290s movie even though movies didn't exist in the 1290s and the actual movie came out in the 1990s.

What do we consider BenHur? A 0001 AD's movie?

Friend,
It's a good question. Nonetheless, I do not consider Apollo 13 a 90s film. Dirty Dancing, IMO, is also not an 80s film.

with all due you respect, you are confusing the setting of the film itself with the release date. a movie released in 1995 is by definition a "90's" movie regardless of whether the film is set in 1970 like Apollo 13 or the late 13th century like Braveheart.
Star Wars ins a 70's movie

Dude, you walked into this...
1 Million Years BC wasn't filmed during 1 Million Years BC.
When can talk about movies filmed on future events....

So does that mean Aliens isn't an 80's movie but like a 2300's movie instead? I'm not stoned enough for this, I need to make a quick trip to The Fire House.

Friend,
There is nothing remotely 80s about Stand By Me or Dirty Dancing. The setting, the music, the peripherals, the mood, the morals, the themes, all are rooted in the 1950s. The very essence of both movies is 1950s life. The movies do not reveal in any way, except perhaps technologically, that they were filmed in the 80s. The 80s filming is an accidental property, something that Aristotle or St. Thomas Aquinas, would not view as essential to be what it is. If either movie were filmed in the 90s, the movie would remain, in essence, a 50s movie. And that is because the essential properties of the film are 1950s properties.
For those introducing argumentum ad absurdum to defend your shaky position, I again ask, what are the essential properties of said movie which define its being? If they are 1290s, then yes, it is a 1290s film. However, Braveheart, as any good Scotsman knows, is neither accurate nor contains the morals of the 1290s.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

It's more about the people, the companies and the actors that make movies from each decade, not what time period the individual movie occurs in.
The Godfather movies don't take place in the 70's, but they help the 70's claim to the best decade for movies.

right because they are SET in the 50s/60's or whatever, but both were released in the 1980's this is simply fact.

its you with the shaky position because again you are confusing the setting of the movie with the release date.

Friend,
There are many movies that the commoner ascribes to be a "Christmas movie," which is anything but a Christmas movie. For instance, Home Alone, Elf, and National Lampoon Christmas Vacation are oft said to be Christmas movies. They are not, especially not Christmas Vacation. In fact, Clark Griswold is an evil character, the antithesis of Christmas.
