Comcast’s media businesses, including NBC, Peacock and Universal, are moving one step closer to a sale.

On Monday morning Comcast said it is spinning off NBCUniversal as well as its European media arm, Sky, into a new publicly traded company.

The new company – housing the Universal movie studios and theme parks, Peacock streaming service, and brands like NBC, Telemundo and Bravo – will be well positioned for deep-pocketed buyers.

Comcast patriarch Brian Roberts said the separation plan “will unlock a more entrepreneurial management approach and open up a multitude of new opportunities for each business.”

But the breakup will require regulatory approval first. Comcast said it expects to complete the spinoff in about a year.

The spinoff announcement was welcomed by investors; Comcast shares traded up more than 20% in premarket trading.

Industry analysts have predicted further deal-making activity in the wake of Paramount’s pending acquisition of CNN’s parent Warner Bros. Discovery. But it’s much harder to predict what form that activity will take.

Does Netflix try again? Amazon and Apple have deep pockets, but they do they need it?

Ellison. The current government won't trust the Murdocks or anyone else to have it.

They may make them operate solo, like they did with MSNBC, and let them sink or swim without dragging Comcaat down

My money is on Netflix.

Lionsgate - NBC Universal merger? Possibly.

Apple isn't interested in a studio otherwise it would have gone after Warner Bros.

Sony - NBC Univesral. Not going to happen.

The story says it is being spun off into a publicly traded company, so it wouldn't necessarily be all bought up by one Netflix type of company. The shares would all be bought up by individual brokerage houses on behalf of their millions of customers/funds. That's how I'm reading it.

So kind of like when AT&T spunoff HBO and Warner Media to separate public entity to merge with Discovery.
