Logan Lucky surprised me because they were low budget Netflix movies

It was not a Netflix movie but it was low budget. Soderbergh came out of retirement to direct this and disturbed it through his company.

Warrior and it's not even close for me. Nick Nolte deserved an Oscar

One of my favorite Hollywood depictions of that era of MMA. Nolte, Hardy and Edgerton all turned in all star performances. RIP Rumble Johnson.

Frank Grillo did great too. I wish Kingdom had gotten a proper conclusion but it went off the rails in Season 3. Studio fricked it all up.

Paddington 2

I know it s a joke in modern times, but it is a flawless movie. I’m aware of the “better than Citizen Kane” meme but it’s the most heartwarming movie in the 21st century.

About time

I have told my 18 and 15 YOs about this one for a while and they kept telling me no because it sounded too much like a romcom. My wife and I watched it without them a few weeks back, and they filtered in and watched it and were both a bit teary eyed. They both said “sorry we never said yes when you brought it up. It was really good and we get it.”

I dogged on Malick for a long time. hated Thin Red Line. Thought most of his 70s work was boring, etc.

Tree of Life blew me away. I don't even know why I wanted to watch it, but I then re-consumed his catalog, and he's been a favorite of mine since

I'dd add another filmmaker I dogged on after this movie but:

Dawn of the Dead (2004). I don't think we get the Walking Dead without it. It's a crazy good zombie movie, made just right. Cheesy a little, and some of the performances are bad, but it just... works.

Since I keep up with reviews (probably too much), very few movies sneak up on me.

There was a film with Mel Gibson and Sean Penn called The Professor and the Mad Man. It got bad reviews, and apparently Mel Gibson hated the final cut. However, I thought it was a very good movie.

It took me ~5 years post release to finally watch Warrior. The same guy directed "Miracle", which I've always thought felt like a Ron Howard movie (very well made, but frequently a bit sappy and reluctant to take risks). For me, that's a common problem with all sports movies, though

Warrior had some of the same issues (school principal/students cheering the televised fight, the "dude radical" cell phone footage of Tommy fricking up the guy in the sparring match), but it did everything else so well that it's probably my favorite sports movie. The "It's OK Tommy, I love you" final scene is done perfectly and has a great score.

Big Fish. I typically don’t like artsy films but I gave it a watch and it has become one of my absolute favorite movies. It just encapsulates a man’s hopes for life. We all want to live an extraordinary life and be someone important. But in the end, we don’t have to leave our little southern towns to live a great life and be remembered by the people we love the most.

500 days of summer is a great call. To this day it’s probably the most gutted I’ve been watching that type of movie.

Easier to do when you catch Deschenel before she hit it big, and JGL before he became the biggest, sexiest, most sought after actor on the planet (tied with Idris Elba at the time).

This! Pre kids we’d go to the movies at least 2x a month. I didn’t see a trailer, just a synopsis. One of my all time favorites

Overall I guess it made a decent movie. There were a couple of things about it that annoyed me.
