Never understood the appeal of the lion king. It’s a musical. And a story about murdering your brother.
I never cared for it as a kid, but my wife did, and it is probably the only Disney movie or any good animanlted movie my two boys never cared for at all.
It’s a musical. It’s not beating Avengers, or toy story, or frozen.

The Lion King is still the highest grossing 2D animated film of all time. Outside of Frozen, it has outgrossed every princess movie, and Frozen was released 20 years afterwards.

You mean 9th? Just say animated. You don’t have to tie some detail to it to make it look better.
The new Beauty and the beast isn’t really animated, but it outfrossed it as well.

MOST Disney animated movies are musicals and they typically appear to very broad audiences.

Every little girl in this country will want to see Frozen 2. Throw in the boys who do as well, and I think most people are overlooking Frozen 2.

Dude, I’d go look into those numbers more. Star Wars is mostly a British and American phenomena. The fans are pissed the frick off and won’t go see Episode IX (certainly not opening night), and a big portion of TLJ was presold tickets. Frozen was only about 100 million under TLJ, so I see no way in hell it will gross higher than Frozen 2. I really think Episode IX grosses 750 mil.

Avengers 4 is pretty obviously going to bring in the most box office barring something incredible from Lion King/Frozen 2/Toy Story 4. Avengers 3 already broke $2 billion and I don't see how most of the people who saw that movie, based on the plot, are gonna be like "Nah, I'll just leave it there." The amount of hype for that movie is going to be off the charts. The only thing that could hurt it is if it is twice as long as the other contenders and is limited by fewer showings per day.
Lion King, Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4 will all break $1 billion though. The animated franchises are so huge you've got to believe it will happen and Lion King is probably the most anticipated "live action" Disney remake. They're all going to make bank.

I think Lion King coming so soon after Avengers and Toy Story will hurt it.

Pretty much every Disney Cartoon is a musical. The ones that aren't are rare,
Big Hero 6 and wreck it Ralph are the only recent stand alones that pop in my mind. Pixar is different.
