I’m talking about shows like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones. Shows that the whole country would look forward to and talk about for weeks. It seems like today there are so many shows and not any ones that are grabbing everyone’s attention. Is there a show out there that has potential that maybe is just starting out?

I don't watch Succession, but it seems like the Internet is full of people going on and on about it.

The problem is the TV viewing audience is so fragmented. There are so many channels and streaming services and shows. It's difficult for a lot of people to latch on to something. And then you have Neflix dropping whole seasons at once, so even if you're watching the same show as other people, you could be episodes ahead or behind them.

The Watchmen on HBO should be pretty big. There has been a ton of hype for it.

I'm hoping His Dark Materials on HBO is pretty popular. Based off a fantasy trilogy of books and could be very good if done right. The show has a great cast too.

This will be the next big one IMO. It even has Lin-Manuel Miranda in it.

Part of the reasons those shows were so big is they built up anticipation each week. You had to wait an entire week before seeing the next episode. In between episodes, you'd have these online communities (like this one) dissecting previous episodes and forecasting what was to come.

Most of the best series today are on streaming platforms and you can binge-watch the entire thing. It cuts out the community aspect of it all. The shows are still fantastic, but they won't generate the same type of buzz.

Game of Thrones

I feel like there is a lot of remaining opportunity here for HBO. Game of Thrones ending was so trash, it's almost as if it didn't happen in my mind.

A good Game of Thrones Prequel could pick up where everything left off, hype wise not story, and run with it.

I definitely think that's what Disney's going to be going for on their D+ platform. Netflix and Amazon dropping their whole season at once is a detriment to the hype. People may talk about it for a week or two, but after that it dies pretty quickly. Even when the show comes out, it's hard to have a real discussion with people binging it right away and those who take their time.

"You been watching stranger things?"
"Oh yeah, this season's great"
"You get to episode 8 yet?"
"Nope, just finished 3 last night."
"Oh" (end of conversation)

I highly doubt that GOT would've been the same powerhouse if HBO dropped it all at once. Instead they have sustained hype for 10+ weeks, and I actually prefer this way of a show being released.

Even on this site it's hard with a show/season having one dedicated thread, rather than each episode having its own thread. I just see it and think "oh i guess I'll avoid this for now and come back in a few days/weeks when I've finished it" and at that point most others have moved on.

TL;DR - releasing shows on a weekly basis rather than dumping all episodes at once makes it much more likely to be a "must-see" tv show.

I wonder if there’s any consideration for releasing a few episodes at a time over the course of a few months.

I love binging more than anyone else but I do miss that weekly anticipation that I used to feel with shows like Lost. It’s easier to process and remember shows when you’re not binging. It’s probably why I’ve really gotten into Yellowstone.

There is a GoT prequel in development but hopefully it leaves that casual element behind.

The problems with the last season of GoT were a confluence of a lot of issues. Some people had been waiting for over 20 plus years for an ending to a story and had so many theories that if everyone of them wasn’t explored and fleshed out and to their exact belief they weren’t going to be happy. Then you had those casual fans who picked up on it in the middle 10s because it had a female protagonist and an attractive male lead who honestly didn’t know much more about it than that - same problem that True Blood had, but that show had a laundry list of issues that I’m not about to get into - and they wanted to give their opinion on it all.

Not to mention the 2 year layoff to allow hype to build and the fact that the execution of the ending was subpar to say the least. But the loudest critics of it were those typical assholes who shite on everything once it gets popular.

Anyways, maybe the Mandalorian will have some of that sauce. Star Wars is still a popular franchise and the show is connected enough to what people love about the OT while being distant enough from the stink of TLJ that it can be a huge success since it is being overseen by arguably the most proven and successful director in the HoM family right now.

If it’s released weekly like some rumors suggest, I could see it getting some of that mojo. I still believe it will be released all at once because Disney doesn’t want it’s season finale pulling attention from RotS, but we’ll see.

I agree that the binge phenomenon has its disadvantages. But are there any shows out there that can hold a candle to shows like The Wire, Breaking Bad, The sopranos. And if so please let me know so I can watch them immediately.
