re: Wheel of Time - Season 1 - Amazon - NOW A BOOK READERS THREAD

I’m beyond being pissed as a book reader. More than anything I’m annoyed with the poor storytelling, cheesy visuals, and substandard dialogue. Looking at it from the lens of just a fantasy fan and wanting a fun fantasy show, it’s just average at best and more mediocre. I’ll give these next two episodes a try but the pilot was just bad.

I have not read the source material so I have a virgin perspective.
I thought it steadily got better through the 3 episodes and by the end of E3 I am sold that it is worth watching. I honestly am enjoying it but I don't have preconceived notions about how it should be playing out.

As a book reader, glad to hear that. I think most book readers’ problem is a preconceived notion (rightfully so, from the book) of what everybody would look like episode one and that wasn’t the case. If it settled into something interesting and has some hooks for the casual viewer by episode 3, that’s all you can ask.
For me, by episode 3, things book readers were upset about should mostly be reconciled. I think most would just have wished episode 1 had been a bit more faithful, but we’re not very far off at the end of 3 of being where we expected.

Main girls nose is super big. Red haired dude made me not want to watch show. They did forge man dirty and that was too fricked up. Thief was my favorite besides the warden dude. Pike is weird looking when she did the spells. Spells in fight seemed almost useless for a long arse time. Warden was killing trollocs way faster while she was dancing. Voldermort was cool looking. The wisdom or whatever she was is annoying as shite also. Lighting was awful and felt cheap. Gleeman was a cool dude.
This. ^^^
....and this.

Overall liked it and will watch it. Lol

Jesus H., this thread is full of bitching. I started reading these in '94 or '95, and I sat back to watch a story being told. Parts of it new, parts of it familiar, parts fantastic to see visually instead of just imagined.
I watch some of my favorite shows on loop, and it's funny to me how different the characters are going from the series finale to the pilot episode. I'm not going to judge a pilot episode portrayal of a character by my notions of who a seasoned, developed character is. I'm not going to judge an adaptation of a character for a new medium by my notions of a seasoned, developed character in a different medium. Just let things play out, for Christ's sake. Stop being little bitches trying to be the first one to say, "I hated it" or "muh production value." Sit back and enjoy the show.

Book reader here.
Have watched episode 1 so far.
What an abomination of an adaptation. Poorly cast. 90s usa network level village settings. Bad acting.
I’ll give it a couple more to get better but woof. What a disaster.

quote:Well, therein lies one of the issue with this show. It's been anticipated, and it didn't go to Syfy, USA or the CW. It's on Prime, which is one of the premium options.
Think people are being a little harsh, but I didn’t read the books and I’m not much of a snob when it comes to some entertainment. I like fantasy and sci fi so I can take a little more with deficiencies.
quote:I just checked, budget for this is 10 mil an episode. Budget for GoT was 6 mil an episode the first season. Even considering inflation, that's still same ballpark.
The quality seems just fine. It’s not got level production quality but it’s fine.
Stepping away from the story and such, where is the money going? I don't see it in set design, I don't see it in costumes or props.
Effects? I guess the hairy minotaur dudes look ok, not that impressed with the magic so far.
We shall see. Perhaps the show hits it's stride and things smooth out. I hope so.

I’d challenge you to go back and watch the first season of GOT. It was nowhere near as good as the late seasons (quality-wise).

That doesn't really help the argument because GOT's first season was still a good season.
I'm choosing to read the books and watch the series at the same time to avoid preconceived opinions to keep an open mind.

Sooo.. um. Is this where we discuss the show and stuff?
I need help figuring out their locations after episode 3.
They were all in the same city.. got separated, and now they are 100 miles apart?
I'm assuming they are all headed east.
One group is north, one group south, and one group east of the city. While freaky mouth voldemort is on the west side of the city?

Same question. Both groups jumped into the water. Was the city surrounded by water on 3 sides? Also looked like Moraine and Lan went through the same crack they came in, so did the eyeless just immediately bail out after having them cornered?

They aren’t 100s of miles apart but they are going in different directions to a certain extent.
Man I really thought this got better each episode.
Anyone curious about Laila Aybara, Perrin’s wife? She seemed to be raising the hammer at him to me.
I really hope it gets better and better.
I have heard that Episode 6 which is the last one screened to critics is the best episode.

I haven't read the books but I felt like they are playing just the tip with quality. It also doesn't feel very dense like GoT did. It feels a few steps above some of those NBC productions like Merlin and Crusoe. I am stil intrigued.
I was wondering about this! I figured in the books she might cast some spells that take time and she needs to be protected. So they had her do a bunch of unnecessary theatrics?

Disagree that GoT was super captivating or entertaining 3 episodes in (which is the comparison right now). It took a good 6 or 7 episodes before I was somewhat interested.

There was such odd dialogue between them and also the hinting at her being pregnant. Like they are clearly trying to convey some sort of conflict between the two that they’ll eventually have to resolve.
Maybe the “fridging” wont be as bad as it appears right now and we get some flashbacks that include her.
Potential darkfriend maybe?

Yeah.. I just figured every witch lady has a warrior guard since it takes time and protection to do some more powerful spells.
But then, in the beginning of the show , they just made a dude disappear?
