Is Game Of Thrones not High Fantasy????

I personally do not think so. A lot of people refer to it as High Fantasy masquerading as Low Fantasy.

GRRM revels in subverting fantasy tropes and cliches. He has High Fantasy elements but they are very very subdued. Magic is barely there and is not really explained in any appreciable way. Almost every character is a shade of grey and anyone that is all good or all bad meets an untimely death.

WOT is unabashedly high fantasy. Magic is there from the very beginning in a very very defined system. This is also clearly defined Good v Evil...although there are severe complications to that, especially later in the series, which lead you to question what "good" actually is.

OK now I get where you are.

Painfully defined at time

Without a doubt....not a book spoiler but by about the 10th or 11th book you start to think "shite I need to go read the first 10 books again with a different perspective!"...I had moments that almost pissed me off reading from 10 through the end

Let's remember to try and keep anything that could be considered Book Spoilers to a minimum. People were psycho in the GOT threads. I don't think this show will get to that level of obsession here or anywhere but I do want to be respectful.

Don't think we have crossed any lines yet. If any non-Book readers disagree let us know.

Except Lord of Chaos... I struggled hard through that one, and ended up reading it again. Was it easier the 2nd time? no.

*edit to say, Good luck to any of you picking up the books for the 1st time. I really loved WoT, and happen to have a few tattoos from it as well.

Most people consider it one of the best two books (the other being tSR) in the entire series. Its certainly the ending I'm most looking forward to.

Maybe you're thinking of Crossroads of Twilight which is...tough.

It probably is; I just remember it being the last one before I took a break from a straight read-through on the whole series. I may have just been burned out.

If I were to read the books before I watch, should I start at new spring, the prequel or start with The eye of the world.

I never read New Spring, so I’d say just go with the 1st

Critics? Who cares

That likely haven’t read the books, don’t know the source material, and view it in the lens of GOT which it is not. Critics are one area I’d steer clear from. I’ve read the books. I’ll judge if it is good.

the rolling stone review specifically didn't read the book and said it was a GoT clone/ripoff. so i'd wager this will be correct for a number of critics.

Which is hilarious because if these clowns knew their fantasy history, they’d know GRRM exists because of Robert Jordan.

The plot is mostly book 1. However they are drawing on small elements, scenes etc from Books 2 and 3 as well.

WoT is my favorite book series. Robert Jordan wrote great characters. I’ve always wanted to see an adaption to the screen, but I also go into this adaptation with some trepidation. A huge part of the novels were the inner monologue, internal struggle, of all the main characters from their point of view. I hope this adaptation can capture that same feeling.

I also understand that such a huge series of novels will have changes for the adaptation. I fear the changes are going to be so widespread as to make it a completely different story. If Rafe Jutkins changes the roles or character of the main players then I will be very disappointed. I know he is a fan of the series. I just don’t want the Amazon adaption to become his personal fan-fic version of the novels.

Are the books at least finished for this one?

Yes, there are 14 books and a prequel. It has been finished for awhile.

The author did die of a rare blood disease before he finished. He knew he was dying so he crafted a ton of notes and his widow hired Brandon Sanderson, one of the best fantasy authors in the game, to finish the series.

It was supposed to be 1 last book but there were so many notes, Sanderson ended up writing 3 to finish the series.

Unlike GRRM, who says that if he dies before the books are finished (ha), no one else will finish them.

Also, GRRM and Robert Jordan were really close friends. GRRM credits Robert Jordan/WOT with him being to do his own series.

You've mentioned this season will be book one and parts of books 2 and 3. I am about halfway through book 2. Do you think the elements in the show from books 2 and 3 will be important? Or do you think I could watch the show and not spoil the books too badly?

I also realize you may have no idea, so that's a fine answer, too.
