What’s the best southern accent you’ve heard in a film?

I’ll be honest, I got nothing. Every single attempted southern accent to me is shite. They never sound authentic to me. Maybe cause they always have Brits trying to play Southerners, but it’s never believable for me. It sounds contrived and over exaggerated.

Anyways, maybe I’m overlooking a performance. What do you think has sounded the best?

As exaggerating as it is I like Craig in Knives Out.

I was wondering, who the f is that? The Mercury Astronauts didn't have Southern accents unless you count Florida and Oklahoma.

But is this thread about, which actor can best pull off a Southern accent when he's not Southern? Because Levon Helm was born and raised in Arkansas. Damn, I have to watch that movie again. It's so damn good sometimes I wish it weren't so long. It always feels like a committment.

Do you mean that? Bc a lot of linguistic experts believe that a southern accent is a British accent slowed down.

Now, I can’t think of anyone off hand that does a great one - so maybe it’s just the coaches in Hollywood

All of the southern accents in movies I’m thinking of suck, but they were Americans

Everybody knows The Godfather and Apocalypse Now and Lonesome Dove, but one of my favorite Robert Duvall performances is in a fairly predictable Clint Eastwood western called Joe Kidd. Duvall plays the main villain, a big rancher who is stealing land from Mexican farmers.

LINK

It's a role Duvall could easily have phoned in, barking orders to his henchmen and sneering every once in a while. But Duvall does something special, giving the character an extra dimension by playing him like a Southern good ole boy, dripping condescension with every remark. His delivery of lines like "If he wuddn't I doubt we'd be talkin'" and "You got to thinkin' 'bout the money, didja?" enhance the character, as he treats everyone like a hired hand -- or worse, as a stupid child he shouldn't even be wasting his time with.

FWIW, I actually think Duvall's performance in Joe Kidd is better than the one he gave in that same year's The Godfather. IMHO it's one of the great villains in movie history and should be much better known.

Jackie Gleason-Smokey and the Bandit-

He should get full credit for dropping the first use of the word “baw” in a film.

Robert Duvall is a Southerner, he’s a military brat and a descendent of Robert E. Lee. I think his dad was an admiral or something.

Watch True Detective Season 1. There’s a few guys in there that nail the Southern Louisiana/Cajun Accent.
