It always cracks me up with the way they think people from NOLA talk.
To me, the worst/most fake New Orleans accent in all of Hollywood is Harry Connick, Jr. The dude went to Newman and Jesuit and lived in Lakeview his whole life and yet he tries to sound like a 1950's Yat from the 9th Ward. It is the worst, most exaggerated New Orleans Yat accent this side of Frank Davis. And, unfortunately, it seems like everyone in Hollywood tries to copy his fake accent whenever they are called upon to play anyone from any place in Louisiana.

Yeah I love The Green Mile but their accents are terrible.
Instead of "Percy" they say "Poicy"

Robert De Niro in Cape Fear.
So unbelievably bad to the point of being comical.

And she was playing a character who was actively trying to HIDE her rural, uneducated accent.

NOLA accent is closer to Philly and central/ south Jersey in my experience. We don't have that New York sound. I can see the accent being mistaken for Providence and even parts of New England though.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the South is composed of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia—and Florida.

But the point is that it is unfair to judge the “authenticity“ of Clarisse Starling’s accent, because the character was actively trying to hide her origins. Of course the accent is somewhat muddled.

US Census Bureau vs Polling firm who gets it wrong alot...
Ok....
Agreed, but even knowing that I still CRINGE when I hear the accent.
Jodie Foster is a great actress, but I just have to grit my teeth when I watch the movie.

The way Brad Pitt says "New Orleans" in Interview With the Vampire is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

But if you were hoping for an regionally-accurate accent, I can see why it might annoy you.

57% of the people in that survey did not consider Texas to be a southern state, and I agree that it is not. I tend to think of Texas as being either a southwestern state, or the sole member of a category all its own.

Exactly the way I have described Texas to some people.

I regretfully watched Where The Crawdads Sing last night with my invisible wife (so no pics), and most of the coastal NC folk are played by Brits.
OT: they also don’t understand or care about geographic accuracy. It was filmed in Houma area. And the characters (in the 60s and then more recently) talk about going to Asheville for things you’d run into the bigger city to buy if you lived in the sticks. Not Wilmington, Raleigh or even Charlotte. Meh, let’s drive clear across the state.
Haha this bothered me as well.
