I’ve found myself getting more and more into 80s horror, particularly slashers. For a long time, Nightmare on Elm Street has been my favorite horror franchise. I’ve been looking to explore the genre further and have found that some streaming services, like Tubi, have a ton of 80s slasher flicks.

So what are some of your favorite 80s slasher movies? What are some low budget gems that most people haven’t heard of? Gimme some recommendations please and thanks!

Student Bodies

I was in high school in the early 80’s and it seemed like a new slasher film was released every Friday for a one week run before being replaced by the next one. Good ones that actually led to a sequel were few and far between so we mostly expected to laugh at the movie, maybe see some breasts, and move on. Student Bodies was a parody of the slasher movies and I really enjoyed it. Other parodies with much bigger budgets were made afterwards so the movie needs to be judged in its historical perspective.

"80s Slashers" is my favorite horror genre. Nothing beats the practical FX, bizarre plots, and twist endings.

There's a megathread on blu-ray.com dedicated to 80s slashers that I highly recommend: 80s Slasher Movies on Blu-ray

The first post in the thread has a list of pretty much every 80s slasher you'd ever want to watch.

Yeah Terror Train is solid.

You might want to give Hell Night a try. Linda Blair is a sorority pledge w/some friends who have to stay in a supposedly haunted mansion overnight to get into their sorority and fraternity. Things don't go as planned.

The Funhouse (1981)

Such a weird bizarre movie. Anybody that has ever been to a sketchy traveling carnival will immediately connect to this one. First half is very atmospheric and spends time in the carnival. Second half becomes a slasher but with a Creature Feature twist. Tobe Hooper’s second best movie behind TCM.

I've been doing a deep dive into Italian horror and giallo lately and one that really sticks with me is Dario Argento's Trauma. It's more of a serial killer mystery then a true slasher, but close enough. The killer uses a unique weapon and method of execution to make for some brutal kills. Plot is a bit of a slow burn but is really shocking when you find out what's going on. Highly recommended.

I was a young kid in the 80s but had aunts who let me watch some crazy stuff. This was probably my favorite of this genre, but haven't seen it in a long time.
