I think he gets a bad rap sometimes.

Perhaps because he seemed the most pompous at times? Like a creepy, older gay uncle?

Still thought the movies were pretty good and he did a solid job.

He did a good job.

He was way too old for the character at the end, though.

He was a good Bond but got too old for the part. A View To A Kill was tough to watch.

Some of his 007 movies were great while a few others had too much humor and crazy plots.

Moore was never the problem with his Bond movies.

Gondola Hovercrafts and the like were.

He brought a different approach to the character. His movies were often lighter, with a lot of sarcasm and “pompous”-ness emanating from Moore.

But they were all enjoyable in their own way, and “Live and Let Die” remains one of the most underrated Bond films IMO.

Yeah I liked him as a kid because he seemed more in-style with what was happening with the 80's movies at the time...the comedic quips...easy-go-lucky attitude.

But I've never gone back to Moore in watching Bond. Never.

If Connery is Raiders of the Lost Ark, then Moore was Temple of Doom. Way more over-the-top Saturday afternoon matinee.

roger moore is honestly bottom 2 for me as Bond himself.

less serious, which was fine, but i have no overwhelming love for his films except Golden Gun. just because that was the first Bond my parents let me watch.

Funny you ask this. I'm currently on a quest to watch them all. I'd seen Dr. No once or twice and Goldfinger a bunch, but I'd never really seen anything more than clips of any of the other Bond films other than a couple of the more recent Daniel Craig ones.

I'm now half way through Octopussy having started from the Dr. No...so I'm about half way. this is all in he past 2 weeks or so, so they're fresh.

Um...I get what Roger Moore is doing, but I think either his style or what they decided to do with his movies doesn't sit well with me. They are so campy, and he spends so much time waiting to deliver whatever punchline he has. So far, I'm 100% Sean Connery at this point. He had some of that too, but there was a darkness and an edge to his Bond. Craig seems less like a weapon for MI6 and more like he ought to be one of the Lords in M's office waiting to talk to 007 when they call him in for an assignment.

Lazenby in On Her Majesty's Secret Service was pretty good, but he just didn't hold the character. I never saw him AS Bond, just a guy playing Bond. While I don't really like what Moore is doing, I do see him as that era's Bond.

I'm excited to see Dalton soon, and of course I want to see Connery's non-canonical return in Never Say Never Again after Octopussy.

I grew up in the 80's so he was the first Bond I was aware of. As a kid I loved the gadgets and hokey one liners his movies are known for.

As an adult I like Sean Connery better. But movies like Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Moonraker were awesome back in the day.

the campiness was a reflection of the times. Moore was saddled with ridiculous storylines which wasn't his fault. Obviously his Bond was softer than the rest but he could be darker when needed (as in For Your Eyes Only), but that element was unfortunately overlooked too often. I do think he had great chemistry with his Bond girls.

He's the worst Bond.

Two of them are alright at best.

I think one of my problems is that I didn't see these either when I was younger or before Austin Powers. Austin Powers really did destroy that type of Bond film forever more. So while the Moore films did it first, having seen them after Powers makes them seem even sillier and more ridiculous than they would have even on their own.

That said, I enjoyed Moonraker WAY more than I thought I was going to...despite a second appearance by Jaws!

Another thing...I was stunned at how old both Connery and Moore either looked or actually were in these movies!

Connery was 32 for Dr. No and looked 40.

Connery was 41 for Diamonds Are Forever, and looks like he's in his 50's!

Crazy enough, Moore was older than Connery...born in 1927 to Connery's 1930. Moore was already 46 for Live and Let die, but looked way younger than Connery did in the previous movie.

By Octopussy, he was 55! He looked great...for 55, but at this point it's creepy watching these young girls throw themselves at him...

Anyway...just more musings from a guy going through all of them now...

Oh, I agree. In addition, he also happened to go through a particularly terrible time for men's fashion, so most of his suits despite being great for the time remind me of something you'd have seen in a Sears catalog back then! Even his watches were crappy.

Agreed again. I think if he had been cast at first and started with Dr. No, he could have been a more serious yet more suave Bond. He'd have always been charming in a different way than Connery, but it didn't have to be so silly had the stories been better.

Each Bond has good and bad movies and brings something different to the role. Moore is at one end with gadgets and cheekiness and Craig is at the other end with action heroesque type role.

Moore was a solid Bond in his own way and had some really good movies...and some just okay movies too. Same as the rest of the Bonds.

Little known fact--- Connery was balding at a young age, and wore varying sizes and types of hairpieces for all of his Bond movies.

ALL OF THEM, going all the way back to 1962's Dr. No...

When I found that out a few years ago it was like I found out Santa Claus wasn't real.

He was okay but he was old when he started and really started to look it by Moonraker. He was around too long.

It didn't help that they started going with heavy camp as well.

Interestingly, they had been looking to bring Dalton on sooner, but Moore kept coming back.
