CONTACT annoyed the F out of me. It was like having science virtue shoveled into my throat. Important science stuff here, pay attention rubes ! And CRASH goes without saying . Most of all AMERICAN BEAUTY. Dear Lord , never has a movie attempted so hard to beat you over the head with an “ important “ POV. It was a caricature of a cartoon inside the fever dream of a self- obsessed and inadequate gay writer/director who had a shitty family . It had the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Tree of Life is a masterpiece. Helps to be at least fifty years old and have that long view of life, fatherhood, your mistakes etc. What people call pretentious in all of Malick’s films seems to be his internal dialogue. And he just thinks differently than most of us. But the reason it is NOT pretentious is because it’s authentic, it’s not him “ attempting to impress “- which after all is the definition of the word pretentious. To be pretentious implies intent. I get that people think his movies may be a deep dive and they don’t like that, but Pretentiousness is not the correct word.

Hey, I like the Big Chill and the occasional Woody Allen movie. This thread has become quite pretentious in itself.

Downvote away.

I just saw recently a preview for a movie about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.

Don't pretend that you boys are sitting through black oppression films. Stick to movies you've seen, not genres that you avoid.

Oh boy. Are you under the impression that academics are the people writing screen plays? Turn off your cable channel news, bro.

All of Woody Allen's movies are to me. I can't even get through them.

You couldnt pay me to watch any of his movies. He's a joke of a director that has gotten by because of one film and almost always gets good critic reviews because that one film he made 40 years ago convinced all these critics that he's a good director. Nobody, has put out more crappy movies than Woody Allen, you are guaranteed to get one crappy movie with good critic reviews every 1-2 years.

I really liked Knives Out, until the writer/director began to push the movie's /pol undertones in the media. Then I saw it for what it was.

Pretty strong opinion for someone who hasn't seen any of his movies.

So you don't watch his movies.

And you know this because you don't watch his movies.

The people bitching about Woody Allen being a one hit wonder or the emperor's new clothes haven't seen Zelig, or Radio Days, or Midnight in Paris, or Blue Jasmine. If Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Sisters are too New York pretentious for you, then fine, but that's not the only type of film that he makes.

Compared to some of the posts here, nothing I see feels pretentious anymore.

Super hypocritical of Hollywood to award the Oscar, too.

Spot on amigo. Tried to watch this on Netflix the other day and I couldn’t get through more than 10 minutes. I didn’t remember it being so shitty the first time I saw it, but as you said it was like being slapped in the face with a caricature that could not be further removed from the actual dynamics of the average American family.

Never said any of them are pretentious, that has nothing to do with it, certainly wouldnt be because its New York related. I'm not a fan of calling any movie that really. I didnt go through his filmography but i've seen probably 7-10 of them if I had to guess. I know that i've watched enough to know that his movies, for the most part, suck. If i've seen that many of your movies I dont need to see any more to know that most of the others are going to be overrated/garbage as well. And for that reason, I havent see a movie of his in 10 years or so and... you couldnt pay me to see another.
