I have never seen the original 1931 version, and would like to get around to it hopefully soon.

There was a 1973 British television version called Frankenstein: The True Story. While it took several liberties with the source material, it was excellent overall. It's claim to fame, so to speak, involved Victor using solar power, rather than lightning, to bring the creature to life. Also the creature was initially very physically handsome and gentle, only growing violent as his body began to decay and he was rejected by Victor and other humans.

I'm actually not a big Robert de Niro fan but I love his portrayal and that version

The Bride of Frankenstein is always ranked up there as the best, though I have never seen it personally.

I'm assuming they're not going to show him drowning a little girl.

See 1931 and then Bride of Frankenstein and follow up with Young Frankenstein, and your whole life will change.
