I know it wasn’t hugely popular when it came out but damn, I didn’t know people hated it. I just watched it again and it was a good production. Not perfect. Patrick wilson was a wimpy Raoul. Probably my biggest issue. Gerard Butler is not the best singer in the world but he has presence. The movie is nice to look at.

The strangest thing about the movie is he isn’t that hideous without the mask. There would be hundreds if not thousands of people more fricked up on the streets of Paris at that time. Certainly not as ducked up as

I actually liked the movie a lot. Thought it was well cast, well scripted and well choreographed. Costumes were top notch and, having seen the broadway version a couple of times ... they were very true to ALW's vision.

I loved it. Butler isn't the best singer in the world, but I absolutely loved his version of Music of the Night. Also cool so see him sing this and then turn around and film 300 later.imagine the phantom kicking someone off stage Spartan style... "THIS IS OPERA!"

Phantom (original cast) is the goat stage musical of all time, so the movie had a lot to live up to.

The movie was enjoyable, but obviously nobody could match brightman and Crawford.

Emmy Rossum, but she was fine in the part ... she used to be really cute and sweet but these days she's gone off the political deep end especially in the realm of being a LBGTP activist.

She's also gone vegan, lost a ton of weight, looks like a skeleton and obviously has some wackadoodle dingbat issues.

I like the movie.

I’m like the one person who hasn’t seen the play, though. I’m not spoiled by it.

From what I see of the movie, I have pretty much zero problems with it.

I actually think it is a fine movie. I enjoy it well enough. I think they could have chosen a stronger musical cast though.

This movie and Day After Tomorrow resulted in a celebrity crush on Emmy Rossum back in my younger days.

I would have liked for them to go the route of Rent and cast stage actors in most of the roles. Rent, IMO is the best film adaptation of a musical ever with Chicago being a close second.

I understand you want some star power pulling people into the theatre but when you have a story such as Phantom, it will draw people no matter what especially if the unknown actors turn out to have incredible voices.

The movie was a good representation of the original stage show. I had no problems with it.

I took my daughter earlier this year to see Phantom at the Saenger. They changed the show in a couple of ways:

The set was more intimate. It had an off-Broadway feel to it, which was a pleasant surprise.

They changed the opening scene. Instead of the chandelier sitting on the stage during the auction, it was suspended above the crowd close to the stage. They removed the part where the auctioneers rip the tarp off of the chandelier to the sound of an explosion. It was a little bit of a letdown.

They changed the Masquerade scene. The old version had a grand stair case. This version didn't. The old version had two of the costumed characters playing a drum and some cymbals, which added a nice oomph to the performance. They were removed also.

All in all, it was still a very good performance. My daughter loved it.

Butler sucked. Best to get the DVD of the stage production at Royal Albert hall. Outstanding and had performances by original and subsequent stars at end of the play, including Sarah Brightman

Seen the live musical about 6 times now. Saw it in New Orleans a couple months ago.

Crazy thing is right after I came home from the Saenger, I watched the original silent movie on you tube. I had never seen the whole movie, just clips over the years.

I was shocked how accurately Andrew Lloyd Webber converted this into a musical. The names/scenes/lines/sometimes costumes are almost identical. There are a couple changes in the 3rd act/finale, and of course, the musical's Phantom is not as hideous, but for the most part, it is as faithful a musical re-telling as it gets.

My wife absolutely loves Rent. She dragged me to the movie when it came out. I hated it the first time. After watching it again, and watching the Broadway production on DVD, it grew on me.

Yeah that's the thing. Plus it played forever and everyone owned the CD so it was just too ingrained in people's minds.

Just like Anne Hathaway as Fantine. I'm sure people thought she's no Ruthie Henshall or LuPone.
