First, it’s noble.

Second, they showed the Pawnee and Lakota to be vastly different in their approach to Dunbar and other whites.

I saw the movie in the theater and haven’t seen it since. But I recall it made me want to live quietly in the middle of nowhere. As I’ve gotten older I want this more than ever.

I'll always remember it for being way too long. But I remember seeing it when I was younger, and I liked it a lot. I can't remember if I saw it in theaters or not, but I think I did.

I've seen it since, but haven't in probably 20 years or more. May be time for a rewatch since it's been coming on the movie channels a ton lately. Just gotta find time to carve out three hours for it.

Fantastic movie. One of the few films that ages like fine wine.

You’re giving them too much credit haha.

ETA: similar to when the officer with the British accent shot himself and said “long live the king…”

The Buffalo hunt scene is incredible.
Crazy that’s how the plains looked just 150 years ago.

Last year, I did my first rewatch of it since seeing it when it was first released.

What bugs me the most is that Costner's character is so horrifically bad at mime. I understand that he doesn't understand native sign language, but there were scenes where he could've easily come up with gestures to get his basic point across. I get that they were trying to showcase him to the natives as less than intelligent, but it was a bit much.

Loved it. Saw it in the theater when it came out. I was traveling for work a lot, recently married with a toddler and baby. Saw it alone one Sunday. Felt like a vacation out West.

I like the extended version more

Not a big fan of 4 hour movies but even the Theatrical 3 hour release felt the Native side was watered down.

Apparently the Extended version gives a little more on the warlike society of the Lakota/Sioux that historically and realistically balances the story to make more sense than just the elementary school sympathetic and peaceful depiction of the Sioux...which is disrespectful... They partook in their own massacres, conquering, displacing and "stealing" of land and regions, resources, women and children of other tribes and infamous victories against the US Army.

What sometimes does slip the mind is the fact that the Sioux were a warlike people even before they began to seriously resist Euro-American expansion into the northern Plains in the middle of the 19th century.

When the Cheyenne tribe fought against Sioux, Cheyenne lost. So unconquerable were the Sioux.

The Lakotas warred and pillaged settled agricultural people such as the Pawnees and Arikaras and also against other mounted nomads such as the Cheyennes, Kiowas, Arapahos and Crows.

Upon ‘discovering’ the forested slopes and lush meadows of the Black Hills (Paha Sapa) around 1776, the Lakotas, now well supplied with firearms, proceeded to displace the Cheyennes and Kiowas, who had previously enjoyed the region’s abundant game, timber and water.

By the 1830s,’ he writes, ‘the Lakotas were the preeminent power of the northern plains.'

‘It was only a matter of time,’ writes R. Eli Paul, ‘before Lakota expansionism came into conflict with that other great power, the United States.’

Every one in a while, for no good reason, I'll holler "Sunkmanitu Tanka Ob Waci!"

My wife is rarely pleased....

No it’s not, whatsoever. Very low iq post

Wolves are awesome

So are sharks.

Wolves and sharks are critical parts of their respective ecosystems.
