What Are The Board’s Thoughts On Carlito’s Way?

Watched it last night for the first time in many years.
Overall, it’s okay. It is a bit melodramatic and seems poorly made, like it is trying too hard.
It has that certain “feel” to it, that fake feel.

Its pretty good. Sean Penn has great hair.

I still think it's a better than average flick, and I'm still pissed he didn't off Benny Blanco when he should have.

Sean Penn and Al Pacino will pretty much always be great or good in anything minus a real stinker like Shanghai Surprise.

Sean Penn at his crying sniveling best and Pacino at his most stoic gangster best.

Good flick, highly underrated. Penn is a fantastic scumbag, Pacino in a fairly subdued non-super over the top mode for a rarity.

Loved it. The pool hall scene makes the whole movie and I’m a huge leguizamo fan so Benny from the broncs made it for me. I’d put it in my top gangster flicks
Side note. Watched mean streets for the first time recently, so godamn good

Awesome movie. Great chase scene. Do many good lines.
“Maybe I don't give a shite. Maybe I don't remember the last time I blew my nose either”
“these new kids now days, they got no respect for human life. They shotgun you just to see you fly in the air”
“Look what I got to fricking go around with, fricking diapers! I shite my pants everyday! I can't walk, I can't hump... you know? Go ahead and kill me, you COCKSUCKER!“
Rudy: Mr. Brigante, there is a problem with Mr. Kleinfeld.
Carlito: What kind of problem?
Rudy: He's in the bathroom fricking Steffie!
Carlito: So? What's the problem? Good for him!
“I don't know you. So, I don't owe”
“You ain’t a lawyer no more, Dave. You’re a gangster now. You’re on the other side. Whole new ball game. You can’t learn about it at school, and you can’t have a latestart.”

Side note side bar: Mean Streets is like the beginning chapter of a Pulitzer prize winning novel (Scorsese's work--and I'm not including Boxcar Bertha intentionally). A simple story with so many good characters and themes that run together, intersect. I so wanted Johnny Boy to get his head blown off. And, it was fun to see the punk beginning of Richie Aprile.

It’s a great movie, IMO.
I love the inner dialogue of Carlito as he is trying to figure out the angles.
I love that it’s a movie about a wisened old gangster who is trying to redeem himself but the old life keeps pulling him back in despite his best efforts. Probably one of the best movies that explores that theme.

Not a classic, but a decent movie.

Good movie, but there is a little overacting by Pacino in this one. Maybe it was the accent. Storyline is great, though.
A lot of the themes and storyline of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City comes from this movie. That and obviously Scarface. But the lawyer from that game is basically Sean Penn's character.

A+ classic gangster movie with a nice love story thrown in too. Sean Penn steals the show.

Yeah, she looked good (even better when he found her dancing at the strip club), but Penelope Ann Miller can't act her way out of a paper bag.
And she is just annoying. Definitely the weak link in the movie.
Carlito's Way is a very underrated movie. I second posts earlier about the jobs done by Penn and Pacino in this flick. As well as the post about the pool hall scene, which is a classic in terms of building tension, and illustrates Carlito's street smarts and ability to get out of a tough spot"
"YOU READY?! HERE COME THE PAIN!!"
The whole nature of Pacino's inner monologue is a great touch-- lines like:
"So here's me in the club playing Humphrey Bogart"
Also, classic spoken lines like,
"OOOOOWEEE, what's that smell"
"Sasso, man, that's Sasso.... Used to be Ron."

It was the opposite of Scarface where main character came of nothing to climb to he top. In Carlito’s way, main character is trying to get out of the game. Brian De Palma directed both.

I remember really enjoying it as a young tween when it came out, but yeah I could see it having not aged well at all. Might need to do a rewatch as an adult.
Would also like to take this time to thank Penelope Ann Miller for her service.
