Saving Private Ryan. Prior to this, most if not all war movies show death as a flop by the actor and dead. SPR was as graphic as war could be, I left the theater stunned. Now I watch it every Memorial Day.

Probably the only movie that I ever walked out of feeling shell shocked. That opening scene was unparalleled.

Are you under the impression slavery was unusual? Or not in places other than the United States?

People are still living as slaves today in parts of the world. For example, the Chinese government continues to imprison, enslave, and kill (using their minority and dissident populations as organ donors as well as slave labor) with little or moral qualms RE: the importance of human life or welfare.

The original reason that the United States had to form and arm a Navy was too many Americans were being captured and sold into slavery by the Barbary Pirates.

The idea of abolishing slavery was a radical idea from places like the US and Great Britain. Our conception of racism or tribalism being evil only makes sense as a moral directive when one agrees that all people are created equal.

Hoosiers. I was 12 and on an all-star basketball team and our coach took us to see it. We were convinced our coach saw the movie before us and that is where he got all of the drills we ran.

Not at all. But the " well, other guys were doing it" sure doesn't make it any less horrible. It sucked here and it sucks everywhere else. Can we agree we at least agree on that?

No, not really. I have never owned slaves or mistreated people. Nothing to feel guilty about. But it doesn't take personal experience to recognize evil conduct.

For example, I am betting you do not own a fighting dog or ever participated in dog fighting. But, we when you learned moe about organized dog fighting rings and how pople bred dogs for this purpose and all - - well, I am betting after becoming educated on the topic you realized " Wow....those are some sick twisted people."

It's kinda like that. So, back off on the defend the who white race thing, bro - - we are just having an intelligent conversation and calling out some piss poor conduct that many white people historically engaged in.

You claimed "we got a lot of personal growth to do" but now you claim the opposite. Who is "we?" Speak for yourself.
The comparing slavery to dog fighting thing doesn't wash either, it's a poor analogy, to the point of almost being offensive. It also has nothing to do with me. "Hey, remember when you found out dog fighting was bad, you know slavery was too." Thanks Mr. Vick.
It's not like you calling out slavery is some new thing; you're not going out on a limb here. And where did I defend the whole white race? The "many white people historically engaged in" slavery thing is also inaccurate.
To me, most race movies are emotionally manipulative crap, designed to shame white people and exploit black trauma. They serve to keep old grievances alive and foment current division. I refuse to carry dead people's baggage.

They’re dead, historically. To whom are you moralizing?
Anyway, Africans still sell their own people into slavery. Go post on that board.

Exactly.

I will say that anyone who currently owns slaves or thinks slavery is not bad, does have some “personal growth” to do on the subject. Everyone els? Not so much

Stand By Me. The closing line really hit home. “I’ve never had friends like the ones I had when I was 12, heck has anyone?”

SPR of course. Opening scene stuck with me for quite some time. Has 4 WWII vets sitting in front of me and my wife at the theater. When the movie was over they were crying and hugging each other. I’ll never forget that. It was very powerful.

Jaws. Still don’t get past waist deep in the ocean.

Porkys. First bush I ever saw

The Deer Hunter - as a teenager, I had a shallow view of war, only made up of heroes, the enemy, the dead, and the living. This movie taught us that the real victims of war are the families left at home.

To Kill A Mockingbird - innocence lost and the brutality of racism in the depression era South.

I would agree with you on Schindler's List. Two others that come to mind are Passion of the Christ and Saving Private Ryan.
