Y’all stop yourself from just enjoying a film bc you’re level setting some expectation going into it

Who said it wasn’t enjoyable? You have your opinion, great for you. Some get tired of hearing about each new horror film being the best/greatest/scariest one yet. It’s not the filmmakers marketing it, it’s the over the top comments. And those do influence people when their expectations are high entering the theater. If you can’t understand that, then it’s probably best to move along.

I thought this movie lived up to the hype and it’s exactly like Barbarian with the scares first and then going off the rails at the end with some comedic things thrown in. It just does it a lot better than Barbarian. The funniest part of the movie is when Brolin wakes up and goes WHAT THE frick

There were some real good scares in the first half.

I would look inward to the reason why other people being excited about a movie they saw makes the movie less good for you. Literally shadow boxing against yourself. People are going to be hyperbolic when they see a movie they like, that’s the beauty of seeing something exciting and new.

I’ll take an over the top comment that talks about what they loved about the film 100 times out of 100 over the same beaten over conversation about “hype” being the reaction to every new movie that comes out. The hype has nothing to do with the film that you are watching. Focus on that part, you aren’t shackled to the weight of other people’s opinions.

These posts usually spend zero effort in actually discussing what they liked/didn’t like about the movie, and rather focus the entire thing about how “well I would’ve liked it more if I had lower expectations” or just broadly throwing out “overrated” which is just wholly uninteresting and again not relating at all to the actual movie but rather how you perceived the reception to it

You just have to throw all expectations in the back burner. I stayed away from all marketing of this movie specifically for this reason. I had no expectations going in. I knew a lot of people like it, but we’ve seen that before, I’m glad they did the marketing because it got people interested. And although you felt like it didn’t live up to that hype, a lot of people heard about the movie that would not have otherwise. My wife hates horror movies and liked this movie. She had fun. Laughed a lot. So I’ll take a couple of people being mad about the hype here and there and having a good successful horror movie.

I had never seen Barbarian, so I just watched it on Netflix. I enjoyed it too for the most part, but the timeline doesn't add up. Would've made slightly more sense if Frank's escapades began in the early 60s and not the 80s.

I enjoyed it. Was a fun movie.
The junkie and Aunt were my favorites.

They could do a prequel with the Aunt doing her witchy weapon stuff in like the 1920s or something.

I enjoyed it. Solid B+. Much better than Barbarian, though that’s not a high bar.

Some real good jump scares. Got a little slow in the middle but picked back up. I don’t know what Cregger’s thing is about ending his movies with way too extended scenes with old women that kind of take you out of the moment, but it’s becoming a calling card now. That chase scene with her just sucked out all the tension. Wasn’t as bad as the water tower in Barbarian. Also, god the giant AR-17 was so unnecessary. I don’t know why people don’t understand you can make a point without beating people over the head with it.

The running posture was creepy and they did a real good job with the sound mixing in the second half once they started getting into the voodoo.

Creepiest part to me was the way the aunt walked out like a toddler with scissors in her hand to cut the teachers hair

Wild movie! Loved every second of it! Seeing the principal running like that in daylight was unsettling and had me locked in from that point on. That run pose is iconic stuff. I’m predicting it becomes a TD celebration this season.

I thought it was a solid flick, but I'm in the camp that it's wildly overrated.

Saw it yesterday. I tried to avoid most of the chatter before seeing. It was unlike anything I have seen before. Like Napoleon Dynamite meets the Exorcist.
One moment the theatre was laughing out loud at the junkie then holding our collective breath as the witchy aunt is revealed.
I can’t really place it squarely in the traditional horror genre. So no comparisons there from me. But for what it is- I really enjoyed it and appreciate it. Great idea, very well acted, done in a compelling way. I’m glad so many people are giving it a shot and speaking well of it.

I want to organize 17 little kids this Halloween to just go running through a neighborhood in that crazy running stance.

I thought that was the mom, walking like a marionette puppet. It was very creepy though.

I still don’t know why Brolin saw the gun in the sky during his fever dream.

I’m pretty sure that was to symbolize that the kids where turned into weapons at 2:17am.

Was weird to me too. At that point though, they hadn't been turned into weapons. If he had said they had been turned into puppets or possesed or something, that would make more sense. I understand the point Cregger is making here with the gun violence in schools, but it really was out of place the way he did it. The principal went crazy and attacked so you could say that about him, but to that point the kids hadn't been "weaponized".

Creggers has said he doesn’t even really know what that is supposed to mean, he saw it in a dream and felt he needed to put it in the movie.

As far as Gladys, pretty sure she fed off of others' health. She thought she could feed off of Alex's parents, but when that didn't work she decided to use the children instead.

Yep. Fairly common Witch trope that they feed off of people for unnaturally long life. Be blood or some way of siphoning life force. Also, fairly common that children usually work best for this, thus all the stories of them abducting children, luring them into the woods, etc.

I'm thinking that her tree had something to do with her life. The way she had the sticks of the people she controlled on in the soil of it, my guess was that was the ritual or whatever that she was feeding on as their souls or whatever fed into the tree. She didn't need them to be in the soil to control them, as seen with others, so that probably was how she was siphoning their vitality.

I read somewhere that Cregger said there is nothing political about the movie, or trying to make any type of statement. Take that for what you will. Sounds like the movie was written more out of the grief of losing Trevor Moore

I saw some people who said it might be ptsd from brolins characters war experience. But it’s probably just up to the viewer.
