The character universe in LoTR is established with very little gray area - and certainly no sexuality - whatsoever
You might be the only prison I have ever heard of discuss LotR and mention “lack of sex” as a negative on the series. In an interesting way your entire comment justifies Tolkien’s entire premise.
There is good and there is evil. Moral ambiguity and sexual immorality are the realm of evil and calling the battle between clearly good and clearly evil “childish and hamfisted” shows you’ve already lost that battle within yourself.

However, I do think Game of Thrones put a pretty harsh light on it in the sense that its ridiculously black/white, good/evil conceit is simplistic and childish.
For fricks sake. This may be the worst take in the history of this board. Not everything needs to be or SHOULD be edgy.

Our family tradition is to watch it between Christmas and New Years. Got started last night. Such a perfect time of year to do this with the early darkness and things slowing down after Christmas.

Well there is a hot take. Tolkien was writing from a Christian Worldview and a perspective shaped by WWII. Of course it’s going to be black and white. That’s what makes it great. If I want nuance I’ll put on Breaking Bad. If you rob LOTR of its transcendental nature you have ripped the heart out of it.

I love, to this day, how much they did with practical effects.
You can even see the difference with Ian McKellan, how much he enjoyed being able to work with his fellow actors (despite the hobbits and dwarves needing to appear much smaller) as opposed to all the green screen acting and lack of fellow actors on set for the Hobbit trilogy.

What a weird fricking take on LotR.

Same here. Still got to finish TRK. My favorite for some reason is still TT, but not by much.

You're one of those weirdos that watches literally anything and thinks to themselves, "Yeah, but they haven't shown anyone on screen I want to frick, so it sucks."
You probably think that while watching Paw Patrol.
fricking Texas man.

Tolkien's writing was far more nuanced than he gets credit for and Martin gets far more credit, while getting far more wrong, than he should.
Everything makes sense (okay except for the Frodo song in the Prancing Pony) in LotR including troop movement and strategy. Seriously, Theodren's defeat of Saruman is a master class of operational planning.
And, if we include Tolkien's additional material, the entire world is literally based around "good" people making horrible decisions. Denethor and Saruman are both examples of good men who got worn down fighting an endless war and broke. The Silmarillion is literal nothing but elves, men, dwarves, and "angels" making the absolute worst decisions.
Martin... really likes rape and food. Armies move across the map like they can teleport. The Dothraki, supposedly based on exhaustive research into Mongols and Plains Indians, are a fricking affront to both cultures. But.. but... what about the fact we never hear about Aragorn's tax policy?
horseshite. They didn't have developed tax policies in that sort of era. Tolkien actually gets the economics of the setting far better than Martin could ever dream of.
Every generation we get a "I'll show Tolkien who is boss." In the 80s it was the Belgariad. Then the Wheel of Time. Then Martin waddled his fat arse up to the stage and thought "I can write a fantasy series filled with women being raped and lots of feasts!"
Because, George RR Martin is all about sexual assault and food. And if you don't believe me, check out his writing before GoT. The pudgy little bastard loves rape.
Tolkien works, still, because his big grandiose fantasy is based in real life.

my high fantasy isn't good unless it involves incest and political intrigue

Still, it was interesting to see multi-dimensional characters, all with the capacity for good and bad acts operating in a politically charged environment that did not allow for such bright lines as draw in LoTR.
Agreed. And if GoT would have kept up the quality through the end it would be my favorite series/movie sequence of all time. But it didn't so in my mind LoTR still reigns supreme.

This world could benefit from some straight line black/white, good/evil thinking. We have lost common sense in the effort to see the “grey” in things as opposed to the more difficult thing and strive to be on the side of good.
There was not a more selfish group of characters in literature than in GOT.
Not something to be lauded and looked up to to be honest.
