do you think No Way Out cheated?
I do.
The idea of Yuri being a spy in the Pentagon was floated, but the impression was given that it was a smokescreen for the coverup of the dead woman.
What? That makes it better. They had legit info on a mole and used it to hide the real murderer, which put the mole in real danger. Loved that twist. It is based on an old noir novel called The Big Clock. Pick up the book; very different but same basic plot.

I was too confused (and young) the first time. I understood it a lot better the second time around. I liked it, but not a film I want to revisit, necessarily.

Mac Attack shows up as his dead son, btw.
Those phantom faces on nyc subway cars… some of the creepiest shite I’ve seen in a movie.
Also, when his girlfriend is dancing and grinding and it turns into some violent-sexual monster appendage situation.

I watched this last night for the first time many years - and I was, frankly, blown away. It's pretty amazing it was made in 1989, as it is just an entirely serious effort that doesn't seem at all aged to me (helps that it's set in the grimy 60s and 70s in NYC).
I understand the theoretical plot hole about how we he know about BZ (the drug), but as someone else said - that's very easily explained by the platoon (or even just him) hearing rumors about it prior to it being used on them (or even some more direct knowledge he somehow stumbled on.)
If you accept that, then I think everything is pretty straightforward.
Man, they really did a great job making Elizabeth Pena terrifying. At one point she says to him "you were babbling on and on about your kids - even the dead one". WTF
The effects were great because I believe they were all practical. When done well, that is ALWAYS better.
One question I have is about the drug: is it perhaps like DMT and it's what CAUSED the end-of-life hallucinations? In this regard, I have to believe Black Mirror has been heavily influenced by this theme of subjective time.
I think there are probably a couple of cheats - mostly when the shot is of only the people that aren't Jake. e.g. It shows Pena dumping his photos down the trash chute and not in his presence. I'm not sure how that would fit into his hallucination.
When he finally let go and joined his son to ascend the stairs...phew, I lost it.

A personal favorite of mine from teenage years. What's interesting to me now is that themes from Jacob's Ladder can be found in The Weeknd's music and videos. Same with The Weeknd's Hurry Up Tomorrow movie coming out this May.

It's thematically based on Ambrose Bierce's Occurrence at Owl's Creek Bridge, which itself is based on the native American concept of 'the dream before dying.'
I do love that you brought this short story up. I feel like there was a time where every 6th grader read this story and loved it, and now, no one knows about it.

Trippy movie. I found it disturbing

I thought it was a good movie, thought-provoking, not one I'm in a hurry to watch again.
I have to chuckle at this:
Somebody who can, do the comparison:
Free with ads, vs paid with ads. How much worse are the ads in the free service?
In theory, the Paramount/Showtime version might be higher resolution, but since we're talking about an older movie, I don't think there's any 4k, or maybe even any 1080 versions out there. Picture and sound quality are probably about the same across the board.

o is he basically experiencing a fever dream while on the operating table in Vietnam?
i always took it as holding on to life when you are dying is worse than hell itself. The dream feels so real cause it is all he has left while dying on a bed in the jungle. As the dream gets darker, it is his mind holding on to the last grips of life.
its been awhile since I've watched it.

It also gets and added bonus, IMHO, that the way it is done makes it reachable knowing the reveal and seeing how it was playing fair, similar to Sixth Sense, with it. It wasn’t a total arse pull like some other reveals such as No Way Out.
Always felt like the Sixth Sense reveal was too close a copy of this one.
One of my all-time favorite movies.
