All the talk about the new Peter Pan movie made me want to watch it again and my GF had never seen it. I hadn’t seen it since I was kid but we used to watch it all the time.

It is definitely super cheesy and I can see how it got mixed reviews now that I’m older but I still thoroughly enjoyed the rewatch. It’s a great twist that hits most of the notes that a straight remake would, but also creates new story based off some of the original writings/plays about Peter Pan.

I think Dustin Hoffman is awesome as Hook and they did a great job at creating the lost boys and making everything seem like a young boys imagination run wild in bringing Neverland to life.

the only part I didn't like is they swapped a role typically played by a petite woman to Robin Williams who doesn't fit that description at all.

Hook is one that just missed me when I was younger. I’ve never actually seen the whole thing. For whatever reason it just didn’t seem like something I’d enjoy, even at 11/12 years old.

It wasn't meant for 11/12 year olds.

I've always liked it...you should give it a watch now, provided you're older.

I probably will never be able to see the film's obvious flaws due to the nostalgia factor. It was the first movie I ever watched in theaters and therefore holds a special place in my heart. If there is one thing that I wish Spielberg would have done it would have been to avoid the tonal shift with Hook. When Hook kidnaps Peter's children, the scene is actually pretty scary - especially its aftermath. You have the indentations of Hook's hook going all the way up the staircase and into the children's bedroom. As awesome as Dustin Hoffman was in the role, I couldn't picture his version of Hook doing something like that to the wall in Wendy's house.

Eh, Hook was very dramatic. When he did the hook scratch, it was because he wanted it all to be dramatic.

It fits the character if you imagine him doing it for the theatre of it all.

Let’s not forget the boo box, stabbing Rufio (Rufio, Ru Fi Oooo), and this

Julia Roberts is terrible in all movies. She is deeply unlikeable.

Maggie Smith was 57 when she started as Wendy in this movie. She looked 87.

I was blown away when I saw her 20 years later in Downton Abbey playing basically the same age.

idk if I've ever been as happy for another kid when Thudd got the sword at the end

of course now this board would hate that ending and call it woke

You don't get it. No one had a problem with Thudd getting the sword, because he was treated like literally any other character.

Nowadays, Thudd would have a soliloquy about how he doesn't get anything because he's a marginalized group, etc. And *then* he'd get the sword because he deserves it and will make all things right.

Having a minority character doesn't make it woke. Having a minority character's entire personality and raison d'etre be based around their minority status is what makes it woke.

Why do you say that? It was one of my favorite movies at that age. Imo one of the best movies ever made for a young boy. It has adventure, danger, humor, lessons on growing up. I still love Hook.

Hot take -- the best performance in Hook is Bob Hoskins as Smee.
