The story goes is Cameron wanted him for T2, and he toured the set and all, but Disney would not let him out of his contract.

And Spielberg wanted the Tim kid from Jurassic Park to play Jack in Hook, but then felt he was too young. He promised him he would find a role later for him, and came good on that promise with JP.

I love Hook. Came out when my friends and I were 9, we went to the Pecanland mall theatre to watch it for a bday party. Some went to Hook, some went to My Girl.

When my daughter was about 4 I introduced Hook to her and I really enjoyed visiting it again as an adult. Williams, Hoffman, Hoskins all crushed it.

Spielberg hated Julia Roberts iirc.

I haven't looked in a while, but a GIF that should be made from this movie that I have found before and lost, is one from the scene where the kids are running back and forth between Rufio and Peter Pan.

It's the perfect GIF for when people are fighting/debating on these boards or in a group chat.

the only part I didn't like is they swapped a role typically played by a petite woman to Robin Williams who doesn't fit that description at all.

What in the actual frick?

The title of Barrie's theatre play was "Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up"

Peter is no longer a lost boy. He grew UP, and looks exactly like what a man with a wife and two kids could look like. His appearance changed so much that even he doesnt recognize the boy in him, when he looks in a mirror

Thats the whole point of the movie

Just like how we evolve in life, no?

doesn't change the fact it was always portrayed by a woman until robin williams. I know how concerned this board is with gender or race swapping.

So entertainers have always been deviants? Is that your point? I dont think anyone will argue that point with you on here. But Barrie wrote him as a boy. Its producers that CHOSE to swap him out

In the 1953 animated film, Peter was voiced by Bobby Driscoll
Peter Pan and the Pirates 1990 series - voiced by Jason Marsden
Hook 1991 film - Robin Williams
Peter Pan 2 Return to Neverland 2002 - voiced by Blayne Weaver
Neverland 2003 film - Rick Sparks
Peter Pan 2003 film - Jeremy Sumpter
Neverland 2011 film - Charlie Rowe
The New Adventures of Peter Pan TV series 2012 - Matt Hill
Once Upon a Time 2013 ABC - Robbie Kay
The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy 2014 webseries - Kyle Walters
Pan 2015 film - Levi Miller
National Theatre Live: Peter Pan 2017 - Paul Hilton
Peter Pan and Wendy 2023 film - Alexander Molony

So the 4 times he was potrayed by a woman is the outlier

I bet noone cried about it in 1904 tho. They realized it was a fictional character that could be played by a female or a male.

What a weird hill to die on. You want a woman playing a grown up, married, 40 year old dad?

I feel like that wouldve been the worst casting decision ever.

ETA Id be willing to bet that Peter as a boy was played by a woman bc a grown woman would be able to work in a play with adult hours while looking like and having the same vocal range as a boy.

Simply out of necessity. Not just because it was played by a woman first.

So was Jimmy Buffett, when they try to steal his shoes on the ship.

George Lucas and Carrie Fisher are the couple kissing on the bridge when Tink hauls Peter to Neverland. They get the magic dust on them and start to float.

Primarily because regulations at the time would not allow children to be on stage, a young boy could not play the role of Peter Pan, and an adult male actor would not have been suited for the role. The play then followed the pantomime tradition of casting a young woman in the role of the principal boy, although the original Peter Pan play was never classified as a pantomime.

Julia Roberts is so terrible in this movie.

I think she does fine with what she's got in this role. I'm trying to think who from that time period could have made a good Tinker bell, maybe meg ryan?

Why do you say that?

I don’t want to assume for him but the movie is very adult in a lot of ways. The themes of parents navigating their career and not being home hits for adults a lot different than it does for children. They may see the theme, but in a different light

This is exactly why the character was and continues to be played by a woman on the stage. Very rarely do you see a prepubescent boy leading a Broadway or West End production, so they have young women playing the role of Peter Pan. They are short, petite, lack body/facial hair and have a high voice - which are typically the traits you find in a 10-year-old boy.

bullshite. it's part of the woke agenda to give a role made for a male to a woman and push their progressive agenda

Decided to watch this with the daughter last night. She enjoyed it, she asked a question at the end that made me laugh though. What was up with the crocodile? She was like it is dead and its mouth is wide open, wouldn’t it just be Hook making the burp noise hiding in the crocodile til everyone leaves?

She is right, what a weird end, they weren’t afraid to kill people, see Rufio.

There are a lot of creepy quotes in this movie.

The “it was you” from Robin to his son about the happy thought. Just the way he says it and the way it was filmed. The infamous “you are playing with us, Peter.” I wonder how old the mermaids were that 40 year old Robin was kissing?
