Better question is what the frick happened to all of the assistant coaches in the final game?

Lance just takes over as coach? Yeah fricking right.

We had discussed this not long ago. The players mutinied against against Bud Kilmer, it could be assumed that stood against all of the coaches. Kilmer didn’t just quit on his own.

Mox was a bit of an a-hole with a hero complex. But saying he was worse and the actual villain of Varsity Blues is a bit of a stretch I always got the feeling he liked football but hated the obsession with it. He wanted to play to hang with his friends and stuck it out for them, not for a general love for the game that someone like Lance and Billy Bob had.

He did genuinely care for his friends and Jules and his little brother. Hell, he went out of his way to get Wendell the score he needed in front of Grambling. He was the only one to check on Billy Bob when he knew he was probably concussed only for Kilmer to tell him to get his arse back on the bench He was also the only player to go see Lance in the hospital. So yeah, Mox was a little pissed he had to even play football because of pressure from his dad, the town, and probably his friends and took that resentment out on Kilmer and impacted the team at times but he’s far from the biggest piece of shite in the movie. Hell, I’d say everyone else other than Billy Bob and maybe Jules, were even bigger pieces of shite than Mox.

I bet the Texas High School athletics association probably doesn't like to have teams in the playoff bracket with literally no coaching staff other than one-legged 18 yr old calling plays.

To be fair, so is Kilmer.

Two head strong characters fighting for control.

Billy Bob screaming that Kilmer loves him like a son. Would you send your son out to play football when his ears are fricking bleeding?

Honestly, that scene was what homecoming week was like for the senior players.

I was one of the more responsible ones and I was going to bed around 2-3AM. Some of the other players went to a titty bar in Ascension and were up all night to the point where they were sleeping it off in empty periods on gameday.

how'd the football career turn out?

Ended up lettering in tennis my senior year. Tennis game was horrific but wasn’t forced to make the same choice that football offered……

Good times.

He was a a senior and went to an academic Ivy League college and probably became a finance millionaire or energy trader in Houston.

Could he have walked on at Brown and been on the roster? Probably. He was obviously a talented player but he just didn't give a shite about playing football and really never did.

The whole point of his plotline is that he was doing it because everyone else wanted him to and not himself.

This begs for a sequel where Mox gets out of jail for a white collar crime (as smart/stupid he was he'd do some dumb shite and get caught), and heads back to Texas.

Playing football with bleeding ears builds character.

Not in West TX, but I had a coach tell me that I needed to choose between chasing girls and playing football. For 16 year old me, that was a pretty easy decision.

I’ve wondered if they were even playoff eligible to begin with. I never could grasp why Kilmer was putting such an emphasis on the district championship and not about winning state. Even at the pep rally Kilmer states that in his time at West Canaan he’s brought them 2 state titles, and 22 district championships and with the fan support that season they were gonna make it 23 and no mention of a 3rd state championship. Was just always odd me

i was never on a team that was a realistic contender for state.
but in High School, District Title was always at the top of our Season Goals list.

So where was West Canaan exactly? It definetly wasn't west Texas from the geography, but the population was mostly white, so it may not have been northeast Texas, either, unless it was some rich Dallas suburb... Which it obviously wasn't.

It looked like Waxahachie area maybe? Or maybe Central Texas Hill country...or some small town between Houston and Austin??

I get that but with who we assume as the #1 QB in the state and most likely top 5 in the country, Wendell Davis, and others you have to imagine West Canaan had a team that could be in contention for the state title. It’s implied that they were a somewhat of a perennial powerhouse. I mean they did beat Gilroy and Gilroy was killing people- hell they were hurting people.

It's based loosely off of Permian High School in Odessa, TX. Which, oddly enough, has a West Odessa.
