This is another intriguing possibility and one that did not immediately leap to mind. His outrageous anti-gay bits in his early comedy routines could have merely been cover.
On the other hand, apparently it is an issue out there in Hollywood - Danny Bonaduce picked up the wrong kind of companion and didn't notice until "he" was in the passenger seat - "Wrong car!" And then, they got into a fight because he didn't want to compensate the cat for his time and trouble.
So, could have been an honest mistake. Could have been Eddie went to the wrong street corner. Certainly he has a history of lots of companions, but despite his association with Rick James, no drug or even alcohol problems have been widely reported or associated with Eddie Murphy himself.
His brother, Charlie, even reinforced Eddie's clean image, "Eddie didn't do any of this shite - so after he went home, it would get crazy."

I'm afraid some of you are right about Charlie Sheen. His appearance as of late also supports that theory.
