The only way I know what year is to go year by year on Wiki to see which movies came out that year. List my faves from there. Then narrow it down.

See I'm different because it actually took me a while to see a lot of 80's movies. I was born in 86 so it wasn't till the early 00's when I really started to appreciate film. So it was 90's comedies I watched as a kid and it seems comedies click with people who grew up watching them. Don't get me wrong I like a lot of 80's comedies but I watch some and I'm like "did I miss something?" A lot of them just don't do it for me. It's kind of the same for 80's dramas/suspenseful/thriller movies too. Other than Blade Runner there isn't a movie I found that does it for me like say No Country For Old Men or Silence of the Lambs does. The list could go on and on for the 90's and 00's for me. But as freaux said, the adventure flicks seemed to be at an all time high and I appreciate the decade for that. Also, I don't have the nastalgia factor going. I was hoping The Muppet movie was 80's bc that would probably have been top 5, but it was 79'.

So this is like an NCAA Tournament bracket where I can turn in more than one and say this one is for a friend or a family member. I know nothing is at stake but I did win once with one of my buddy Brian's brackets.

80s actually has a lot of really good thrillers. Just on my Top 20 list alone I got Body Heat,Blow Out(That's leaving out De Palma's other 80s thrillers like Dressed to Kill and Body Double),Videodrome,Thief,Blue Velvet,House of Games and First Blood(First Blood is actually more thriller than pure action like the other Rambo flicks).

And there's a whole bunch of other underrated ones.

Did not realize how difficult it would be, left out some great movies. I narrowed my choices by movies I have seen over and over again....some of them are questionable,

OK, here's my first public draft (actually like the tenth I've done before posting) subject to change.

1. Coming to America (1988)
2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
3. Rocky 3 & 4 (1982 & 1985)
4. Wall Street (1987)
5. Airplane! (1980)
6. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
7. Major League (1989)
8. Die Hard (1988)
9. Bloodsport/Kickboxer (1988/1989) (couldn't separate these)
10. Spaceballs (1987)
11. Beverly Hills Cop 1&2 (1984 & 1987)
12. The Goonies (1985)
13. Caddyshack (1980)
14. The Last Emperor (1987)
15. Eight Men Out (1988)
16. Planes Trains and Automobiles (1987)
17. A Christmas Story (1983)
18. Trading Places (1983)
19. James Bond Movies (Had to put it here on the strength of License to Kill, which is my favorite Bond movie of all time.)
20. The Last Dragon (1985)

I think it's best not to do a "near misses" list because it's just too painful. I'll run myself crazy trying to make sure I include every one I want to pay respect to. I had to cut some movies that I consider uncuttable from my list. Like some of my favorite fricking movies of all time. God damn that was hard!

First Edit: Add The Last Dragon/Drop Brewster's Millions.
Second Edit: Shuffled some positions around.

The one movie that I assume is a drama from the 80's that I haven't seen is Brazil. Because of this thread know I should see it. I don't know how I've missed it for over 25 years. I am going to watch it asap.

I saw Blue Velvet, and that movie jacked me up. I won't ever watch it again. Dennis Hoppers character was possibly the eeriest dude I have ever seen in a movie ever. I was uncomfortable the entire time he was on the screen. I guess it says something for a movie to do that to you.

I love the shite out of The Natural. Honestly, I was shaking my head at some people's lists because of certain movies they left off, and then I saw what I had to leave off of mine. It's tough.

it's my favorite baseball movie, but field of dreams made the list ahead of it for sentimental reasons. most, or all, of my list is sentimental/nostalgic
