The Natural would barely make my list of top 5 baseball movies of the 80s. And its eons behind Bull Durham and Eight Men Out.

The 80's did have some great baseball movies. I think I got three on my list. But The Natural is probably my favorite, just edging out Eight Men Out. I love the mystical feel of Hobbs. "Pick me a winner Bobby" (btw the espn/peter gammons/baseball tonight commercial spoofing that scene was great). The "This is the greatest player to pick up a bat" feel to it is great. Almost like Marcus Dupree's story. Except it's baseball. And fake.

This.

The Natural is good imo, but it didn't make my top 65 to pair down.

I'm surprised The Natural isn't getting more love.
it's my favorite baseball movie, but field of dreams made the list ahead of it for sentimental reasons. most, or all, of my list is sentimental/nostalgic

This kind of thinking is what makes the list so hard. I originally did my list that way and had a list of 40. I cut it down to 20 by deciding which ones I would watch right now if they were all suddenly available.

Field of Dreams got cut and The Natural stayed. For me I think it was the right decision. I made this decision knowing that the day after seeing Field of Dreams in the theater I called my dad back home and told him to go watch it.

Sentimentality be damned.

If sentimentality entered into it I'd have to choose Man of the House over No Country for Old Men in the making of some Tommy Lee Jones list.

I've never seen The Natural, Field of Dreams or Eight Men Out(I do want to see this one, it's in my queue).

I hated baseball when I was a kid in the 80s. I still don't really like it all that much.

Alright yall can heap your hate on me now.

I've seen then, but I pretty much agree with your stance on baseball. Ok maybe not to the extent of hate, but still.

I will say that generally baseball movies are better than most sports movies. That either has to do with the American love of the sport or because the sport is just more "film" friendly.

Naw man boxing movies. I could probably name a dozen I really like but I don't want to hijack the voting here.

Again, for somebody that has seen a ton of great movies, you also havent seen a ton of great movies.

I mean I could care less about bobsledding. Would I go see Cool Runnings if it was rereleased in 3d? You bet your arse I would.

I know you told us your parents were older. Did your dad like baseball, or more importantly, did you guys ever go throw a baseball in the yard?

Is there anything you did with your dad as a kid that at some point you kind of just decided you didn't want to do it any more? Maybe he used to take you fishing and one day you just thought you were too damned cool to go fishing with him any more.

That's what Field of Dreams is really about. Baseball is just something from their youth lots of people can connect with.

My dad was the coach of a little league team. Both my older brothers played on his team and so did I. I was never really good playing for him but I kept playing because their was nothing else to do in a small town in the summer. When I got older and moved on to Pony league ball I developed into a good player. I was the best hitter on the team. I had always played in the outfield when I was younger so I stayed in center field and became the first center fielder to ever make the all-star team in that league(they usually just picked another infielder because at that level anyone could play in the outfield).

The point of all of this is, until I saw that movie and thought about it, I never realized the reason I became a good player is because my dad worked with me and helped make me into a very sound player. It wasn't fun while it was happening but until I saw that movie I never thanked him or even let him know I appreciate3d it in any way.

I am sure every kid probably goes through similar situations whether their dad's or mom's were trying to teach them about a sport, photography, cooking, driving or a number of other skills. We all take that stuff for granted as kids.

Field of dreams made some of us realize how gig of a shite we were. The baseball stuff in it is cool but not really important.

Edited to add:

Yea it got cut from my list.

No, not my dad. He has pretty much has zero interest in any kind of sport. He grew up in the library back when he was kid in the 50s he's what they would have called a bookworm.

You might be on to something though. I was a really skinny unathletic kid and I hated all those jock assholes who I was forced to play baseball with. They were all super into it and couldn't understand why they were so worked up over something I found so boring.

How can a sports movie come anything close to Return of the King?

The Sandlot was a near perfect movie. The only reason it wasnt perfect is because Wendy Peffercorn didnt lifeguard topless.

Can't believe you've turned the greatest memory in my life into a joke.

I liked it so much I made it my sig quote.

Hope you don't mind me not giving you credit. It would have made one of us sound ghey (not that there's anything wrong w/that).

Did he teach you the Dewey Decimal system?

If so did you not use the skill he taught you to educate yourself & become one of the brightest posters on the Movie/TV Board (a much more momentous feat than playing Pony league baseball)?

Did you ever thank him for the days you spend looking through those files, going to the shelf, finding the book and bringing it back to him?

If you never did, watching Field of Dreams would make you wish you had.

Haha he probably tried but I didn't care for books when I was young I still don't really read as much as I should. All I cared about when I was a kid were cartoons and video games. I truly am one of those MTV Generation kids.

I'm nowhere near as smart as my dad I always tell him he could have been a science or history teacher. I hated school I made D's & F's all through out high school.
