I'm not married to it. I kind of defaulted to it being #1. And I am a softie for John Cusack.

I also did enforce my personal One Director rule just to make difficult cuts. I wanted to rank about 40 movies.

yeah 40 is about right for the 80's or a top 20 in each genre for the 80's.

Horror/thriller
Action/Adventure
Comedy
Drama
late night cinemax breast exploitation.

Had a frick of a fun time compiling the best of the 80s.

Having a frick of an agonizing time putting 20 of them in a hierarchy and abandoning the rest.

It's like killing your children. This was the hardest ballot I've ever compiled -- even harder than the All Time list. There's just something about 80s films... it's my youth. I cut Caddyshack. CADDYSHACK!

We didn't have skinemax but I remember watching those multi color distorted signals of the channel hoping to get a peak.(yes kids times were rough before internet porn) Used to watch mtv that way too after parents got rid of it cause you could still here the sound.

It's being torn between judging for merit and what you enjoyed in your youth. As an adult I really think Ghandi is a great movie, but I'd choose to watch Desperately Seeking Susan 4 out of 5 times over it.

I chose films essentially on the concept of "did they feel like an 80s film?" I think the 80s just had a certain tone -- and a marvelous counter reaction in the underbelly -- that makes the 80s really unique. There was this silly, over the top mainstream coupled with this dark underground... and rarely did they meet. Well, until the 90s, when they met with reckless abandon.

80s movies, more than any other decade, are stuck in time. They are not timeless.

I would disagree. Every movie is dated and everything has a date. 80s movies feel like 80s movies 30s movies feel like 30s movies 60s movies feel like 60s,etc.

That's what I love about them. It's like looking in a time capsule.

I guess I'm the only one that thought this list was super easy. Every list I've made so far was harder and I'm sure every other decade will be too. This wasn't like killing children it was like makin babies. Fun and only takes a few minutes. BA DA CHING. Thank you thank you I'll be here all night.

There hasn't been a vote for Rain Man I don't think. Also, is The Color Purple any good? I've read the book but never saw the movie. Heard it doesn't have the lesbo action.

It was difficult for me because I saw tons of 80s movies as a child, so a lot of my more sentimental choices (ET, Stand By Me) are borne of youthful innocence. And then I have to mix in some of the more mature films I've seen in the last 10 years or so that moved me on intellectual and artful levels. Battling that dynamic was tough when they're both slated in very different sets of criteria. Nostalgia and emotion vs. psychological complexity. What do you value you more? That sort of thing.

The 90s and 00s are easier because I was a more cognitive person when I digested movies. Well, I guess I was only a teenager in the 90s, but still, looking at it with a linear scope, I grasped things with more nuanced evaluation as time passed.

I feel bad because this is before my time, and there are many movies I haven't seen that I'm very sure should be on my list. The 90s movies were my movies.

I'll keep silent on what movies for my own sake

I also have a system for determining what movies to rank. So I can live with how I vote.

you can tell the people that are either old enough to remember when these movies came out or are just Star Wars purists

I don't think i was ever more excited when a movie came out as this one, and I never refer to the first 3 Star Wars movies as IV, V and VI. Its Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
