Lately I've been watching interviews conducted by the Television Academy Foundation and inevitably shows start out with a concept and then usually evolve over time. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not.

More often than not I enjoy the first season or two more than successive seasons as a staleness sets in, but once in a while the introduction of a new character or two actually improve the series. Reverend Jim to Taxi comes to mind.

Anyway, what shows do you think improved over their run?

Watching the early seasons of Seinfeld is tough.. I liked the show better once the characters had time to form. For example, Kramer wasn't "Kramer" as we now remember him until a couple seasons in.
Cheers was another for me, using the same as above.
But you're right, there's a ton of them that were awesome the first few seasons and then just went downhill fast...

Always Sunny, especially after the addition of Frank.

Seinfeld season 1 is almost unwatchable

Peep Show took about a season and a half to really get established

those are probably the 2 best comedies of the past 30 years

i'm re-watching Sopranos and season 1 is kind of weak. it's more of a black comedy than a drama and the production is pretty shite

GOT season 1 clearly had a stunted budget compared to the later seasons. you barely even get perspective shots and it's clearly on sets

Breaking Bad

Parks and Rec first season didn't know what it wanted to be yet

can we count partial seasons

GOT and Dexter 1-4 all got better after that it went down hill

Lost got better every season until the ending.

Deep Space Nine

Pretty much every ST series other than the original series (which started strong and maintained).

I tend to feel like most shows peak in the middle to late middle. Some have a steeper curve to get there.

The Office (US) is almost unwatchable for the first 1-1.5 seasons, but gets better then falls off again.

GoT started off slow (partially budget, partially world-building), but kept getting better up to [insert your season of choice, but the end was shite].

Breaking Bad is probably the best example of a show that got progressively better and better and ended strong.

Star Trek TNG fits this category.

Tasha Yar as head of security was an abomination. Dr. Beverly Crusher starts out as a real nag. They had trouble at first in creating realistic women characters who were strong women. This is not uncommon. Its such a shame, too, because great female characters with real grit are sorely lacking in modern story telling.

It wasn’t just the women characters, though. William Ryker lacked depth (for most of the series) until the end.

The great acting of Brent Spiner as Data, Patrick Stewart as Picard, and to a lesser extent LeVar Burton as LaForge, helped carry the show through the lean first season.

I thought every season of Leftovers was better than the one before. Not many seasons, but still.

The Andy Griffith Show would have been forgotten about if Andy didn't see that Barney should be the comedy while he played straight instead of Andy being the goofball like the show originally started out

Family Guy. Season 1 is awful, seasons 2 and 3 are steps in the right direction, seasons 4-9 are hands down their best work.

Too bad Game of Thrones first season was its best season.
