I just think Navarro is a horrible character
something just occurred to me while i was working out. what this character needed was a writer / director / actress combo like the one that gave us Kima in the Wire. Kima was a bad arse, sort of dark and brooding, but also had a very relatable personality, feminine in her own way, but was also tough and obviously checked the "gay" box as well. she was a great character in all the ways that Navarro fails to be, and proof that it's not just about shoehorning women into roles that should be played by men.
edit to add - not entirely fair since we had a much longer timeline to get to know Kima, but...i still think it's a pretty good comparison. just checked that actress's wiki and she had acted a little prior to the Wire, but not much.

I did listen to a post show recap pod and they said the guy that woke up was Ember, the Director of the lab and hes in intensive care and expected to live.
So, a witness to the event that the entire plot of this series revolves around survives 3 days naked in sub-zero conditions and we get a passing comment on the phone about their condition?
A post show podcast is more informative than my own focused eyes and ears. All the action and conversation that has taken place amongst these characters and nobody says, “frickin’ can you believe this dude survived after 3 days of being frozen?!!!!”
Not one scene in a hospital bed for the only “living” witness that was worth an amputation procedure?
Yet we have time to see Navarro take down a wife beater and sabotage his gas tank, while the Chief’s stepdaughter is disciplined over recording lesbian sex.
Hope there is a payoff for the added difficulty in following this storyline

With all due respect to Pizzolatto he hasn't had a real hit since S1 so he shouldn't be shitting on this show really. That being said I'm sure he feels like HBO is attaching themselves to his life's work to make a buck.

All of this.
The show isn’t bad so far, it’s also not great.
But so far, Pizzolatto is a one hit wonder. S3 was..ok. S2, genuinely terrible.

My theory.
Rose talks about how the dead want one of three things. To visit, to show you something, or to take you with them. She also mentions that there are others who can see the dead.
I'm guessing Raymond Clark is one of these people and he is seeing Ann K. Thus the "she is awake"

contrast with season 1 again
I mean why are you holding it to S1's standards? Very few shows ever will be as good as True Detective S1. I get that this is the same show but it's really not, obviously a whole different team behind it. You're going to be doing this forever if your standard is S1. Of course it's not as good, I don't think any person is making that argument and nobody was even expecting it to be. If it can even sniff the realm of S1, it'll be a success for me. Just give me a good season of TV/mystery and I'll be happy, I don't need it to equal the depth of S1 and Rust and Marty's characters.

all of this by the end of the SECOND EPISODE.
what do we know about Danvers by comparison? virtually nothing. she sleeps with her boss and she has a failed marriage or two. her boss somehow screwed her over by giving her the job in Ennis (doesnt explain how or why this was bad) and she is now screwing him over by keeping the case in Ennis instead of Anchorage (doesnt explain how or why this is bad).
Seriously? You knew Rust's daughters death and it lead to the end of a marriage. Have you been missing the part where Danvers is raising a kid that isn't her daughter because there was some sort of traumatic car accident death that resulted in the death of a boyfriend/fiancé
and child?
I know you haven't been in here hating on the show for 20 pages, but you're just nit picking it to death and holding it to S1's standards and it's going to make you end up hating the show instead of enjoying it for what it is so far.

Have zero faith this will turn out any good but I've enjoyed the first two episodes. It's almost impossible for any show to live up the greatness of S1 so I'll just try to enjoy this as it's own deal.

My wife and I are half way through the 2nd season.. IMO, the root of the problem with this season is there are to many "main" characters.. just too fragmented and as a result the story line just feels like a bit of a hot mess..

I didn’t watch it until recently doing the series rewatch and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I don’t get the hate for it at this point. IMO it wasn’t as good as 1 but it was definitely better than 2.

Your focused eyes and ears somehow let you miss an entire conversation where she was told he was in an induced coma and Danvers telling the hospital to call her as soon as/if he wakes up? Wow, you were really paying attention. The podcast told you nothing that that scene didn't tell us. The person obviously hasn't woken up from the coma and I'm sure it'll be brought back up whether he comes out of it or not or if they're able to talk to him. Calm down.

the nexus of my original post back on page 17 or 18 or so was a quote from the director of season 4 comparing her season to season 1, as well as her comments on the "bros".
in fact, here's the season 4 director's comment that i just looked up to help you out:
quote:
The bros and hardcore fanboys of [Season 1] have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it’s kind of sad, considering all the 5 star ones.
she also said the thing about season one being sweaty and light and masculine or whatever, compared to her "dark and feminine" season 4.
so...i dont know, if she's going to make the comparison herself, it seems to be fair game on a thread about the show to make the comparison myself.
quote:
You're just breaking down S1 into minute details while purposefully generalizing this season.
this is probably fair criticism. i've seen season 1 multiple times, and i've only watched this season's episodes once each. but that said - even on my first time through season 1, these were details that i absolutely caught and understood. and the reason we caught and understood that stuff is because the character was so obviously damaged from whatever happened in his past. you felt it. you felt how much in pain he was at Marty's house that first dinner. there was emotion there.
the stuff you mentioned about Danvers' backstory was mentioned in some sort of dry exposition which i only vaguely remember, and i honestly dont care because her character is so immensely unlikeable.

i'm in the tiny percentage of the population that actually likes season 2 AND 3 just fine.

I didn’t hate S2 like most. I like Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn quite a bit and thought they did fine. Writing was off but the story was good.
One thing I appreciate about the series is it always seems to choose a locale that is truly a part of the story.

her facial expressions are bland all the time. Doesn't show emotion. Barely emotes at all. Delivery is monotone and boring
