yeah definitely. i think she is MEANT to be more of a compassionate character, but is just poorly written and also not a great actress. it's more like "hey here's the character you should care about". SHOW ME dont tell me.
Her characters has a lot of the same traits as Rust, but you aren't really intrigued by her and root for her because the acting job or writing or combo of both just doesn't make her very captivating in any way.

It’s not like I posted spoilers. For all I know, I’m way off base and she ends up becoming a victim late in the game and her drunk boyfriend is actually the villain. Only thing that makes it feel like a spoiler is the fact that the dialogue seems lazily written (could just be a red herring)

I feel like they are purposely setting him up as too nice/soft, and he could have some kind of connection to whatever is going on. Looked like some bite marks on the bodies and he's got is dogs, one he was even cleaning wounds from a fight of some kind.
NSAggie your write-up overall is spot on. Especially the female characters coming off as what a female thinks male jackasses are supposed to be.
Kali Reis (Navarro) doesn't seem like a very good actress, and I too was very surprised to see her attached to True Detective opposite Jodie Fisher when casting was first announced. I never heard of her and looked up to see she only had 1 acting role before. Though according to wiki-pedia she received several accolades and awards/award nominations. Didn't see to gauge for myself, but possibly this is just bad writing?
You are also correct that they must show some kind of background or payoff for the 2 leads soon because nobody really gives a shite about 2 main characters yet.

Danvers reminds me of someone I worked with who has some pretty significant trauma in her life so she just shut off emotionally from everything. She just wasn’t attached to anything but always trying to fill that hole with something.
