what's funny is that this show is called "true detective" and the initial culprit was discovered b/c his prostitute pawned one of the victim's items
You're being too critical. Lots of good detective work leading up to this point in the show. I'll recount:
1. Repressed gay motorbike cop accidentally finds body while pussing out of suicide attempt (or perhaps it was just some metaphor for how his life is careening out of his control)
2. Dark chick cop and dirty cop canvass Casper's house with all kinds of weird shite and turn up not a single clue or lead. Bunch of penis and boob "art"
3. Dirty Copy pummels a newspaper reporter and threatens to corpse-rape a school kid's father. Surprised when he learns that his wife is an ace detective and figured him out.
4. Dark Chick Cop totally whiffs on a prostitution bust. To top it off, her sister is involved and she had no fricking clue.
5. Dark chick cop gets missing persons info and promptly forgets about it.
6. Dark chick cop finds out that rich powerful guys like whores. Dark chick cop and dirty cop interview weird shrink guy who confirms that Casper liked whores - along with some cryptic bullshite about how if he didn't appease himself with whores, he'd be under a compulsion to do some darker shite.
7. Repressed gay cop beats the streets and happens to run into some gay whores, who confirm that Casper liked whores, but mostly for watching. Repressed gay cop doesn't find out shite else, including where all this fricking went down.
8. Wannabe mobster gets a tip on Casper's safe-house. Dirty cop, in a feat of investigative genius, takes tip from wannabe mobster. While detectiving the safe house/crime scene, Dirty Cop sees hard drive will who knows what kinds of sex/murder stuff. Hard drive goes missing.
9. Dirty Cop and Dark Cop, while bird dogging some shite lead watch evidence blow up, almost get killed, and unsuccessfully chase masked perp across L.A.
10. In a CSI moment, detectives learn that a hooker pawned a missing watch. Immediately jump to the conclusion that, despite ritualistic killing and mutilation, despite all of the evidence at the safe house that that was the crime scene, despite the fact that his house also got tossed, despite the fact that there is some shady high level cover up going on, despite all of the money/power plays, despite all of the information about a vast network of whores working politico parties, despite the fact that Velcoro was fake murdered with rubber bullets "like cops use" - the only rational explanation was that one of Casper's whores ripped him off. Further, despite the fact that the whore pawned the watch, they don't even talk to her and rally to arrest her supposed pimp bc he has priors and she doesn't.
11. They mighty-morphin shift from detectives to SWAT detail and full on raid to nab one person of interest for questioning. Someone (likely mayor) drops dime and they get in a gunfight. Everybody has the cheat code for unlimited ammo. Bad guys like to kill civilians for no apparent reason...probably because they know the political fallout on the cops will jeopardize their career aspirations.

I've watched some shows where i have no idea what is going on and its awesome. This is not one of them.

This season is supposed to be about the characters not the plot. This is a drama about cops.

That gun scene was excruciating.
I'm still going to watch because its filmed well and I'm literally in love with RM but damn, last night was bad.

I'm probably the only one but I actually like Riggins' characcter. I think he's doing a good job of showing how fricked up he is considering his past.
It's really awakward to watch, which is the point I think. People claim that's just him being a shitty actor but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Now the marriage scene in the diner was totally random

by walking around with a pouty, brooding face all the time?
and I get that pretty much all the characters are acting this way, his just is the most annoying and least convincing

You mean totally shitty and completely unbelievable.
He's been awful. There is no reason whatsoever to have him and McAdams.

mcadams chasing an SUV on foot with a handgun while the guy shoots at her with an automatic weapon was great. Then as he was shooting at her, she side stepped some bullets. lol
then she was shooting her gun in the same scene, pointing it directly at the ground. WTF

So was last season, yet the plot was great. I'm well aware that a show called True Detective will in fact be about a detective or 4.

Lol I'm right there with you. I believe Riggins will ultimately play a huge role towards the end and it will include all of that military work he did.

They really just put a bad taste in my mouth for the shootout scene when it started with a clearly CGI'ed explosion in the building.
I hate when shows / movies now fake effects that were real just a few years ago. You can tell when its CGI, and it just comes off as being cheap.

I'm surprised to see the negative reactions to the gunfight. I thought it was one of, if not the, high point of S2 thus far. Pretty damn intense.
I think the negativity formulated in here through the first three 3 episodes has likely poisoned the thread. I'll return after the season to see where the opinions stand rather than reading the same complaints each week.

Who is Riggins? Is that Taylor Kitsch?

She didn't want a Brandon Lee moment?

season 1 was the same. season 1 just had better characters, better acting, and boobies.

Season 1 also had the mystique of not knowing whether or not the show was building to something supernatural. Although some (including myself) were disappointed everything turned out to be "real and not as cool as the conspiracy theories", we were satisfied enough because of the great interactions with MM and WH, and the fact that we were kept guessing all the way until the 2nd-to-last episode or so.
We also had the buy-in with the characters who were much more charismatic and understandable than this foursome of brooding damaged goods.
Going into this season, we already knew that Nick Pizzalato was making a basic cop drama, not some possible hybrid between mystery story and a fantastical occult piece. We were behind the 8-ball before the season even started because we knew this was going to be a canned cop story.
BTW, this cannot be stressed enough = Kitsch's character is horrible. He sucks literally and figuratively.

The gunfight is annoying because it feels like another ploy to get people to keep watching...just like how dreadfully uninteresting things were until Velcoro got shotgunned.
I'm fine holding out hope that this will get better and all play out...but I've said it before...I'm getting a final season of Dexter vibe-kept waiting for it to evolve into a great story, and it just never did.
