Rust will get strung up and murdered by the cult in episode 8. Note the line in the first episode about how he keeps a crucifix because he meditates on the idea of what it takes to sacrifice yourself for a cause, not because he is a Christian. Note how the bodies have been found in the last few years. It's been heading this way ever since the very beginning.

with only one episode left, i don't see there being enough time to reintroduce marty"s father in law and daughter to the thickening plot, and wrap everything up. I think that theory has been put to bed.

It was probably discussed before, but what golf course was Marty on? Squirrel Run? Atchafalaya?

I don't know about being put to bed, as it has not been proven to be wrong; however, I was simply stating the evidence I noticed not that I am Decatur-certain that it will be an important part of the plot.
Theories that have been "put to bed" are Marty or Rust being the killer, Rust investigating the murders since he left the force, Marty's daughter being on the video, and Rust and Marty meeting before Marty's interview. And probably several others I can't remember or have blocked out of my memory.

Why would maggie go see Rust? And she kept asking a lot of questions to Marty about what he knew and why he was helping
I just took it as concern for her daughters' father as well as some guilt for what she did. She knows Marty and Rust are about to get into something dangerous.

we can bank on ep8 being pretty thrilling no matter what. I think its ultimate success rides on Glen Fleschlers performance as errol.

Could be. Something just seemed off with her. Can't really put my finger on it, but I also am not going to harp on it.
Does anyone have a close shot of Rust's tattoo on his arm? trying to compare to the preview for episode 8.

And it seems less likely that Rust Cohle is the mastermind behind the crimes and more likely the scar-faced lawnmower man did it. He is a weirdo Gomer Pyle (the Full Metal Jacket one, not the Andy Griffith Show spinoff one) and so obviously villainous he spoke aloud to himself eerily and then practically let out an evil laugh after sending Detectives Gilbough and Papania in the wrong direction.

While not being convinced the daughter is in the video, I also don't think the theory can be "put to bed" based on Marty's brief viewing.
Rust told Marty that "you need to watch it". Since Marty was in agreement with Rust after his short viewing, there would have been no need for Rust to make Marty continue watching even if the daughter later appeared on the tape.
There were multiple pictures shown depicting different scenes and girls. For someone that remembers taping stuff on a camcorder, you didn't just tape a few minutes of an event and leave the rest of the tape blank . . . instead, you picked up recording the next related event where the first ended on the tape.

The theory was that Marty saw his daughter in the video. We know he did not see her as it was Marie Fontenot in the video, so it has definitely been put to bed. But, sure there may be a video of her on tape; however, not in what Marty saw which was the theory. Maybe I mis-worded my statement in the previous post.

The biggest question I had all night. It was just so... strange. Nothing important was asked nor said, but it was specifically included in the episode.
She hasn't seen him in about a decade (since she let him lay the pipe to her to get back at Marty) and now she suddenly tracks him down to say "Sooooo... whatcha up to these days"? I don't buy it.

It was more like. "So is my ex-husband gonna get killed doing this stuff and I also kind of feel bad about using you and forcing you to disappear for 8 years"

I thought this referred to her always asking him about Marty cheating.
it absolutely did and was an awesome line. she didn't want the truth back then. just wanted Rust to bs her, which he did. She was a coward, as evidenced by her need to screw Rust to get Marty to leave as opposed to just calling Marty out and leaving...he's now calling her out for what it is.

I got the impression she always cared for Rust and after her interview with the detectives, figured that he may be in some trouble and wanted to try and help...
ETA that makes much more sense then she is "in on it" and was trying to figure out how much info they had

Exactly. She went to see Rust after Marty told her he was helping Rust with something, but wouldn't go into details. I think she was basically trying to find out if her kids father was about to die.
