Why does the public keep assuming Scars is doing all of this alone?

It's more than one person. It has always been this way.

There are big people in the cult.

Rust is behind it all. His real name is Roger Childress-Ledoux. The real Rust Cohle actually dies in the DEA shootout, and "Rust" assumed his identity to get into LSP (notice that Childress just sucked it up when Rust slapped the frick out of him in the PD early in the series...he knows who's in charge). He iced Tuttle bc he got sloppy, then he took the evidence and gave Marty shitty latex gloves that would impart fingerprints. Now he's "hired" Marty's firm and - guess what - moved all of the evidence, including pitcures and videotapes that noone other than someone "involved" would have into Marty's office! I also think he's now going to redo the storage unit to make it look like he was building a case against Marty the whole time - genius.

Rust has been on the long con since the 80s because he was jealous of Marty's baseball career (Rust was clearly a bookish nerd in high school), so he fricked his wife, drove them into divorce (is probably turning out his daughters) and is going to have his cousin acid-face torture and kill him and frame Marty for it all. Sacrificing himself for a cause, you might say.

Never wanted to spoil for anyone. I figure it's safe to post it now bc it's so patently obvious that I'm right.

I wouldn't like that ending but I'm undecided whether I would be furious at the waste of my time or inclined to give a hat tip for the balls it would take to put that on air.

Either way, you've earned a green arrow.

I think there was a cult but it died out. The murder in 1995 and the new murder in 2012 was Errol's work. I think we will find out that there is a reason for the time gap between the two. Maybe errol was in prison or the looney bin

I think the coverup in 2012 is people that were involved in the cult in 1995 with Sam Tuttle are now trying to cover their arse in 2012. I think Sam Tuttle was the Yellow King and the cult died out with his death. I think errol is trying to relive the past and has created a Yellow King alter to worship his dead grandfather

This ending is going to leave a LOT of unanswered questions. It is pretty obvious that Errol is the Yellow King, but I don't think we are going to get any kind of resolution on the overarching plot.

Such as:

How did Billy Lee Tuttle die?
What was the purpose behind all the kidnappings and killings?
Who are all the "big people" behind the cult?
Why just kill two women in strange, ritualistic ways that is sure to be publicly discovered?

Not to mention I'm annoyed by the ridiculous amount of dead red herrings in this show. Marty daughter's posing dolls in a gang rape scene is NOT a mere coincidence, and it is the tv writer's version of trolling his own audience if this is not connected somehow.

I'm holding on to the Maggie theory for the following reasons...

- when she goes to Rust's place, before seducing him, she looks at all the stuff on the walls and but does not ask any questions. Just went ahead with setting up the breakup between Marty and rust.
- how the hell did she know where Rust was working? Maybe I missed something... Doubt Marty would tell her. The detectives maybe?
- Audrey's whorishness... Something about them together just bugs me about it. Maggie defended Audrey's "look" at the kitchen table early in the series. Other things too that are too detailed to write here.

Furthermore she has a nice big house and looks to be pretty well off. If she married a doctor I would think that it would have been revealed. But many times these people that rust have been chasing are referred to as big and powerful. If the players are related to her family I can imagine them setting her up with the nice surroundings in return for her silence. Hell maybe they also set up "B" to trap marty(for being a dumbass) and set up their final breakup.

I doubt Maggie plays a major role in Ep. 8. She is a non-factor.

Solid theory. It works for me because I have a problem with lawnmower guy being some mastermind or even a high ranking dude in the cult.

Sure, they can always reveal him to be some hidden sick genius next week but that would be a pretty big cheat.

I agree, but that does not necessarily mean

ETA: has anyone put together a loose family tree from what we learned? I think I missed some branches...

I know next season is supposed to be an entirely new story but I wouldn't object to a small head fake on the writer's part and have season two be the two 2012 detectives picking up where (a possibly dead) Rust and Marty left off.

There just doesn't seem enough time to wrap this up with any satisfaction.

Best theory I have seen yet, but my only question is why children and young girls? Virgins to sacrafice? Something to go along with that the old black lady said about Old Man Tuttle having lots of different children from different women (possibly young virgins)
