The only problem with True Detective going forward is that no season will be able to match or exceed this season. Unless they can rope in some A-List talents, this is its peak. I can't see them going with the interview style going forward and that's one of the many things that makes this show so unique and amazing. This writer has his shite cut out from him.

She got Rust involved unnecessarily and is lying about it in 2012 to the detectives.

Or Marty fricking up and mixing up their stories/cover ups of previous events ( remember this is a guy who can't even keep his side pieces in line).
As I said before, I think they met before the interviews, Rust shows Marty what he's been working on and potentially something that involves someone close to him (I say the oldest daughter), and Marty agrees to lying to the current investigators because they're going to go after the cult themselves vigilante style.

Why?
The detectives already told Marty they had information about him and Rust being in contact. They asked him the last time he spoke to Rust and Marty said 2002, but they said they had heard something different.
ETA: This was episode 1 or 2

This is my thinking as well. The loading of the gun would also make sense because the last time they saw each other was presumably during their altercation over Maggie - so Marty still probably has hard feelings toward Rust. JMO.

I see Future seasons being like Band of Brothers and the Pacific. While both great in their own right. Band of Brothers was damn near perfection.
