The morning after they found Dora when Marty wakes up on the recliner after being awoken by Maggie, Maggie comments that she has missed him the last couple of nights (or days - can't remember)
What's his alibi for Jan 2, 1995?
Morning of January 4:
Maggie: "Hey, Lone Ranger."
Marty: "Hey, ugh, dreaming."
Maggie: "Been missing you the last couple days."
Marty doesn't answer question, says he has a debriefing.
So it looks like Marty did not go home or got home late on January 2 & 3. He does not have an explanation for where he is at. You can assume he's with Lisa but it does not necessarily follow that he is with her.

i still want to know why he'd participate in a high risk and highly illegal operation that would lead the cops closer to the killer's identity...in TX, if he was the killer

For many fans of weird fiction, the surprising appearance of this madness-inducing play into what ostensibly appeared to be just another police procedural was a bolt of lighting. Suddenly, the tone of the show changed completely, signaling the descent into a particular brand of horror rarely (if ever) seen on television.

I'm not sure Marty appreciated the level of risk Rust was taking before he decided to participate. Rust didn't even realize the level of risk entailed other than he might just get a bullet in the head if he was made. Rust didn't know he was going to have to participate in a smash and grab in the Hoston projects.

Cocaine's a helluva drug.
No, I really don't know, but that's a solid question. I like where this series is going though.

This could just mean he's been out of the house more than in, or that he was being typically distant. I think you are really reaching on this.

This. They were just establishing that the marriage isn't doing great.

Well we so know that Maggie is a nurse and Marty is a detective, which means the kids have to be staying with someone a good bit of the time while working hours overlap.

There could be a number of explanations for it but I'm pretty sure it's the only alibi-type detail that has been given so far.
I really think that Maggie started to catch on to something. Pretty sure she knows Marty was involved with more than one woman. I think she knows that he continued to lie about all of his activities during that period.
I think we've caught glimpses of what Marty is capable of...blowing up on Rust, assaulting Lisa's date, slapping the shite out of his daughter...he is the man possessed by ungovernable rage.
“Sorry I got in your face, guy. I wouldn’t have really done something like that. I’m not a psycho.”
No, Marty, you're not a psycho.

Half the time I think you're trolling but you're really starting to make me think it's possible. I'll be disappointed if you're right, though.

My theory is made in good faith. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong. But I'm not trolling.

Anybody notice how marty always checks the payphone for change after he hangs up? Just a neurotic quirk they threw in there for no reason? Is he just tight with money?

I hadn't. But I always did that back in the payphone days.

IMO the person who arranged the crime scene from Ep. 1 is calm, intelligent, meticulous, organized, pretty much everything Marty is not. Marty is volatile, explosive, and prone to lashing out. Crimes of passion such as blowing Ledoux's head off are more his speed.

What if his print comes back from the change dispenser on the payphone that Guy Francis' "attorney" used?

His prints are probably on the change return of every payphone south of I10

Finally getting around to a rewatch. A few notes on things that I've seen bounced and mostly answered, but just to verify (from episode 1):
- Marty is interviewed 6 days after Rust
- I now consider the hard-assed uniformed state police captain in episode 1 to be a "person of interest". Watch his demeanor in the scenes that he is in.
- Feel even more strongly about Rust tracking this case BEFORE Dora Lange. All of the books in his apartment regarding sex crimes and the like are already out in his apartment over two months prior to her murder. Yes, he's in homicide so it's plausible that he would be reading that material as part of the job, but the titles seemed pretty specific considering that he only had two "open and shut" cases in the three months prior to the Lange case.
- I think Marty learned a lot over the last 17 years, he's a better detective, sharper. He realizes that their interest is in Cohle pretty early into the interview and it seems that he is being aloof about Cohle's activities over the last 10 years, not to mention his own.
- I got the feeling that Rust is not going to survive the series and is going to sacrifice himself somehow in the end. The comment about lacking the constitution for suicide paired with his meditations on how Jesus could consciously allow himself to be crucified make me think that something happens where he goes willing to his death for the greater good.

I've read the whole thread. Curious SFP, why are you so obsessed with a show that you seem to not care much for? Serious question.
I don't spend a whole day in an American Idol thread because I don't care for the show.
What gives?
