I haven't read the thread since the first few pages following the episode, so I'm sorry if this has already been discussed but...
Is it possible there never was a real falling out or that it was staged to allow the cover to go off grid with the investigation, and away from the influence of the powers?

In episode one Marty always refers to Rust in the past tence

Yes. This was significant. Bookmark it, Rust is already dead. Marty's interview is two weeks later.
Maybe at that point Marty doesn't realize the detectives have spotted Rust at the scene of one of the crimes, thinking he's still off the grid?

I always try and use an obvious answer before I go deeper looking for it. According to the face value of what Marty is telling the two detectives is has been 10 years since he talked to Rust and the events were 17 years ago. Why would there be anything strange about using past tense?
ETA: I just read an article that makes me totally rethink this whole series. TD has a forth layer to it.
Mind blown

Marty could know what Rust is really doing, being off the grid still trying to solve the case, and is just covering for him.

Also, why have we still yet to see the scene play out that was shown at the end of episode 3 I think it was? Where the guy was walking along the edge of that tree line in his underwear and holding a machete. Rust says something along the lines of "at the end there's always a monster." I think at the time we all assumed that was Reggie Ledoux but then we see everything unfold with Ledoux in this last episode.

The actor playing Ledoux did a great job portraying someone on LSD and meth. He barely had any screentime but insantly became very memorable with all of that psychedelic-tinged demented shite he was saying.

I think that had to do with Ledoux's compound. The director was setting us up for going to that area.

Thing is that according to Chambers the monster doesn't have a mask on. So we were lead to believe the monster was Ledoux. Marty dispatched him because he thought he was a monster but the real monster is coming. He is still killing.

quote:I'm starting to believe this as well. In the '02 timeline, Marty does seem a bit up in arms that Rust is ready to jump back into a case that they supposedly solved. Once Rust shows or brings Marty the devil catchers from Light The Way things should get interesting. I also believe that Rust diving back into this case will be one of the contributing factors in him and Laurie splitting up [Remember, "he gave her cause"].

The end of Marty & Maggie has something to do with his daughter Audrey imo. The way Marty looked at his daughter in the car is the same enraged look he had on his face while on the phone with crazy pussy.
quote:Makes me believe that we are dealing with a cult like group. Ledoux was definitely a part of it. But, his role in the killings way be lesser than we know at the moment.

Haven't watched yet. Is this episode better than the last?

Why does everyone keep saying the Lange case was solved? Just because ledoux is dead, doesn't mean it's solved. It's CLEARLY much larger than that.
I think the Mark 1:41 verse is applicable because maybe they feel they are cleansing the world of evil/ugly/suffering? Just a guess.
I feel like the show is too big for it to just be a "who did it"
Too many people are involved and connected.

Marty's daughter being molested or exposed to the cult by the grandfather seems almost too obvious at this point. Is it possible it was a teacher from Light the Way that moved to her school after Andrew? Maybe we have or haven't been introduced to this person yet?

he looked pretty sinister there. I am wondering where Nick is going with the scene of MArty confronting the young guy in jail. I am assuming that was one of the boys who was in the car with his daughter.

Only reason I ask is because Rust looked back at it a couple times.
Weren't there 5 men on horses in that photo? I can't remember if a girl was in the picture, but I have a feeling that Dora was in that same photo. Marty's daughter had placed 5 male dolls over the female doll in the bedroom scene before dinner (second episode). Also Cohle makes 5 aluminum 'soldiers' from his beer cans during the interview. Maybe Cohle has figured out the ritual for sacrifice. Maybe it's a killing performed by 5 men.
Also, I think this is mere coincidence, but when Rust asks Marty if he's ever been hunting, he says he's killed a 10 point. All of the sets of antlers used for the killings were 10 points

Another thing I just remembered. When Dewall was meeting with Rust and Ginger, Dewall told Rust "there's a shadow on you son."
Definitely vernacular similar to what Reggie used/related to the cult.

Im thinking this is the case. Not necessarily a teacher but someone that hasn't been introduced yet.

Awesome catch. I have a feeling Marty is involved and will sacrifice his own daughter.
