The plot description for the 2027 film is nothing of the sort in terms of motivations for the main character. Additionally, his seduction of the investigator will undoubtedly result in her agreeing with his motivations (which was never the case in the previous versions [in 1968 she did not go over to him whereas in 1999 she was essentially corrupted]).

It's basically theft of an IP.

Also, your post points out significant differences between the McQueen and Brosnan versions. Why was the Brosnan remake not IP theft?

These don't sound very different. 2027 is just missing the word bored. But the voice-over at the start of the teaser certainly suggest he's doing things like heists and racing cars because he has to constantly up the thrill to feel anything. In other words, boredom.

this is a modern re-telling no different than Ocean's 11 not a shot for shot remake of the original.

Incorrect.

A modern retelling would be taking the story, putting it in the modern day and keeping it close to the original intention.


As soon as you inject race and politics and colonialization into this - it's no longer TCA. So, yes, it's IP Theft.

Had MBJ made a straight "modern retelling," he would focus on a cool heist movie with a black billionaire. Some people would have said something, but they would have been the minority and have been wrong. A black Thomas Crown would be 100% ok.
