Fight scenes with people flying through the air. Movie fights used to look kind of like actual fights. Now everyone is a Bruce Lee/Baryshnikov that can avoid being shot by doing the limbo.

high quantity of CGI in movies just makes the movies appear far too unrealistic. There's some line that's crossed with CGI that gets on my nerve. It's probably a character flaw of mine. But regardless it gets me wishing they strip down movies back a bit bring back more realism.

It's just a personal preference - for instance I would take the original Superman over any of the new CGI versions any day. With 70's era special effects and all.

I'm more forgiving if it's a sci-fi or fantasy film. I'm not going to hold their feet to the fire because Flash doesn't look like he's realistically running at the speed of light.

But if it's a historical film and the CGI takes you out of the movie, then I consider it a strike against the movie.

cgi blood

This was especially bad in Rambo and took a little away from the nonstop awesome violence.

I don't know what the specific difference was, but I saw both Justice League and Thor Ragnarok recently and was really surprised at how much better Thor looked even though they both feature CGI effects heavy characters mixed with real actors. Not trying to turn this into the usual Marvel vs. DC arguing, but what DC did was bad and what Marvel did was good.

Alien 3. They went with the dog xenomorph and for the most part used conventional creature effects. But a few scenes where they felt they couldn't get the puppets or actor to move the way they want, they went CG. The infamous scene where it corners Ripley and flexes it's jaw is pretty dope, but just before that was some awful CG of it dropping from the ceiling. And pretty much every scene they had it running on the ceiling.

Older movie, so can probably be forgiven a bit.

the opening scene of "man of steel" is just Russell crowe standing against a completely computer generated background getting onto his insect horse. this looks fake as frick. I can't think of one instance of this ever looking real.

This is largely why big budget films suffer across the board - there are audience expectations for grander and grander scenes, and they're physically impossible, so you have to do a combination of physical and CG effects, or just go all CG. Back when effects weren't very good, good filmmakers had to work hard to cover that up, use effects sparingly and cover it in other, creative ways. Today, from a budget standpoint, it seems that it is just cheaper/easier to CG as much as possible for these types of films (certainly the Star Wars "prequels" did this, adding another problem to an already long list.)

Now, that they seem to have no restraint - take one of my pet peeves - the Goblin scene in The Hobbit. A little restraint could have saved it. But, they kept zooming in and out, tracking with the action - I don't know how long that scene actually was, but it felt like enough content for a half hour sitcom. And the longer it went on, the faker it looked.

Now that was a big budget movie, with a very, very talented director and team - a director and team that delivered a full trilogy of related material already, in superb fashion. The Hobbit wasn't "bad" by any stretch, but the overindulgence of CGI in that case weakened the movie rather than strengthening. I was turned off to the point I didn't watch any more films in the series.

Plus, the first film was really inconsistent and ultimately weak to me, and that didn't help.
