frick them for that. Maybe Netflix can pick up bored to death
Interesting what Netflix is doing. If you think it out a bit. In the future shows may change networks for different reasons which could be pretty cool.

hbo sells the rights to shows to other networks for shitload of money, i.e. the sopranos getting aired on A&E after its HBO run. HBO made 2.5 mil per episode it sold to A&E
i was reading somewhere that HBO will make hundreds of millions by syndicating game of thrones to a large amount of networks around the world

HBO's writing is consistently excellent, as well. AMC has done a good job on their end, but whether it's adapting GOT to the small screen or coming up with something new like True Detective, Deadwood, Boardwalk, etc. It seems that I rarely find myself bored or complaining about most of the writing I've seen from HBO.

Sex and the City on TBS and E! is another good example of this.

they were never going to be able to keep that cast together for very long.
IMO the 3 best shows that HBO kind of screwed its subscribers by killing too early were Rome, Carnival, and Deadwood.

hbo is one of the few things that is worth every damn penny
I don't like girls, but I'm sure it is well written, etc. just appeals to a different audience. shite, I'd watch it. It liked what I saw with the exception of lena dunham's tits that look like George costanzas

I'm about halfway through season 2 of Deadwood right now and I love it. Always trust in HBO

Rifling through the series on HBOgo, there isn't a single one that I wouldn't at least try out just by looking at it. I may not love every one, but I at least feel like I'm getting my time's worth out of at least watching the first 2-3 episodes to make a decision if I should go further.
Though I enjoy programming from both, I can;t necessarily say the same about the series on FX and AMC.

First, they can go places most networks can't with the gratuitous violence and nudity for example. Secondly, they can be a lot more selective about what they produce because they don't have to fill as many time slots with original programming as other networks. The Over The Air networks have to put out a ton of crap and reality TV because they have so many hours to fill. They don't even get to show reruns much anymore. I remember back in the day your shows didn't go away when they had played all the new episodes, they just ran reruns in the same time slot.

Cable companies and the networks on them only have to worry about getting advertisers to pay for commercials as long as that happens and people pay for cable, they could give less of a shite about the quality they put on.
I don't get your point here. The networks still want people to watch their shows, otherwise the advertising spots are worthless. That means that it would behoove them to put out quality. Just like it benefits the subscription networks to put out quality because it attracts subscribers.

Rome
In a way, Rome makes GoT possible - they learned their lesson about spending too much money on battle scenes and whatnot, so, now, with GoT - you only get selected bits - or they cleverly cut away (Tyrion getting knocked out). They spend money on persistent things - Castle Black, Winterfell, King's Landings, the Dragons, etc., and not waste it on more transitory items like a large pitched battle.
