I thought it was a great, mystery solving circle back to the first one and “ and one admiral’s daughter.” Plus Penny in Maverick was way hotter than Charlie in the first one so love interest was already upgraded.
I don’t think Mav needs a young gf. Hot? Yes. But having one his age that can be foil to his, well, maverick personality fits better than having young eye candy. Having him be with a Megan Fox type character is an action movie cliche' that doesn’t fit Mav as we’ve never seen him go for that type either movie.

Clearly the military was able to build a program that essentially captured the inner consciousness of Admiral Kazansky not long after his cancer diagnosis so that a great military mind can be preserved and sit and weigh in on strategic meetings via hologram. Unfortunately a certain a very large, completely fictional Asian country THATS DEFINITELY NOT CHINA has managed to hack and steal this program and use it as the base for a fleet AI operated, high tech fighter jets. Now Mav and his hand picked crew have to fly against a computer that thinks like his best friend and only pilot who could ever give him a run for his money.

Exactly.
What would be out of character for Mav is to date a Megan Fox type. He’s literally never done that in either flick. His type is a woman his age with stability. He has no roots being with younger women romantically

Not to mention that outside of Career Opportunities, TG:M is maybe the best Connelly has ever looked. And the best part is that for the most part, she looks to have aged fairly naturally.

Curious what the plot will be here. They were able to put Mav into action with the storyline last time, but no way its believable once again and you know they can't let him sit on the sidelines and just hand the action over to the younger gen in the last movie.
I'm guessing he's loaned out to an ally somewhere to help train them and shite hits the fan, forcing him into the action bc they aren't capable of it

Slow down. She looked great especially for her age but no way she compared favorably to her roles in movies like The Rocketeer (or The Hot Spot).

If Jennifer Connelly was Ford Taurus then what the frick was Kelly McGillis?
The only grit involved with that was what Mav was doing to his teeth to get through sleeping with her.
Now. If you want to REALLY flip the script and get something really against the grain- you go with Mav dating a tranny and instead of fighting commies with jets fighting a bigoted administration in the courtroom over his lover’s complete sex change being paid for by the Navy. Tom plays duel roles in this- Mav and Daniel Kaffee.
