My guess
Russia/China badazz pilot shoots down/kills Rooster in a small skirmish action that quickly escalates.
I’m really strong on this one because one thing that made the original TG so captivating was the tragedy of Goose’s death. TG Maverick lacked this type of gripping tragic scene, but still was magnificent.
Mav goes nuclear and goes after bad guy… loses first dogfight but survives.
Comes back, gets his mojo back together and in a lengthy dogfight reaffirms his Top Dog of the Sky position by killing enemy badazz.
Hangman is somewhere in the picture and Mav hands him the reigns to the franchise for future flick

I took my dad to see Maverick. he was retired Navy, and was late 70's with dementia. it was just us and a few other older gentlemen with military hats on. when the movie finished up, I asked my dad what he thought - he looks at me, and says - I haven't had a Freedom Boner this hard since Nam.
all the vets got a good laugh out of that - damn I miss that man.

That’s what hit me the hardest with Maverick. I loved it, but the love and admiration some older vets had for it and vocalized it made me love it even more.
There was an older Navy guy in the office. After the movie has been out a couple weeks I saw him in the hallway. I mentioned the wife and I seeing it and asked him…he said, “Sir, I watched it for the 4th time on Sunday!” lol.

Im all for it with Cruise involved. But it's probably going to heavily have a plot around drones being the new form of warfare.
