With horror being my favorite genre, I watch a ton of horror movies throughout the year. I haven't seen everything, but feel I've watched enough to make what is my top movies of the year. 2018 was a giant year for Shudder, the horror streaming platform. I am really excited with the future of Shudder and original content.

Here they are, with how they can be watched, if available:

Top 15 Horror Movies of 2018

1. Hereditary (Prime)
2. Halloween (DVD or Digital Rental)
3. A Quiet Place (DVD or Digital Rental)
4. Overlord (DVD or Digital Rental)
5. Upgrade (DVD or Digital Rental)
6. The Night Eats the World (Prime)
7. Satan's Slaves (Shudder)
8. Revenge (Shudder)
9. Summer of ‘84 (Shudder)
10. The Witch in the Window (Shudder)
11. Mandy (Shudder)
12. Terrified (Shudder)
13. Hell Fest (DVD or Digital Rental)
14. Terrifier (Netflix)
15. The Predator (DVD or Digital Rental)

Honorable Mentions to: The Nun and Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich.

I liked Apostle but not as much as the ones listed. Bird Box was solid but again, liked the other movies more.

For me it was too simple. The cult stuff gets old. Shoulda took a different path

Because they whiffed on the obvious great ending and went with the lowest common denominator ending

Ending it should have had: seance was occurring the entire time in the tree house by new family (whom we saw as the support group in the movie) that had moved in. This seance was slowly expelling the family we followed in the movie (who were really dead)

Instead we get this cult plot that dies the death of a thousand cuts and relies too tightly on actions and circumstances outside the cults control for their plan to work the way it did

Horror is my favorite genre as well, but you lost me with Hereditary at 1.

I guess I’d have to sit down and think about what I saw. FWIW, I like the rest of your list. Terrified was my big surprise of the year. Wasn’t expecting much, but it was pretty great.

Thanks for posting. I always appreciate your views. I have quibbles here and there, but there are also some I haven’t seen.

Also like that you gave a mention to The Nun. I almost didn’t watch it because of the reviews, but I thought it was decent.

I really wanted to see it and was planning on opening night but ended up waiting a few weeks. Saw the bad reviews and went in with lowered expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed. Found it very creepy and atmospheric. Did not deserve the negative reviews it got.

Not trying to knock this genre or anything but I probably couldn’t name 3 “horror” films this year

I prefer the mental illness aspect to the cult stuff. Nothing is as scary as someone who has lost track of reality, IMO. Wish they had stuck with the direction they were going.

I like the seance aspect as well but isn't that pretty damn close to The Others, not that it would stop them from doing something similar?

Horror is one of the most popular movie genres and one of the biggest box office earners because people love going to movies to get scared. You not being able to name more than 3 horror movies for 2018 says more about you than the horror genre. And I really don't mean that to sound as snarky as it does.

Thanks for the list. I'm also a big fan of horror, though we haven't watched much this year outside the big ones (I've seen your top 5, and agree, they are all excellent).

I'm gonna use the rest of your list as a viewing guide.
