No way Tom would ever disrespect Don Vito or even Michael the way he would lay into Sonny in front of other family members. And Sonny basically let him. For all of Sonny's tough guy demeanor, it was really Michael who Hagan feared and respected more.

Tom wouldn't be with the family if not for Sonny.

Of course Tom respected him.

Tom and Sonny were extremely close. He was probably the only person (other than Vito) that could lay into Sonny like that thanks to their relationship.

Because he was a mess. Don was a father to Tom, Tom was loyal to him. Tom respected Michael because hey were similar. Intelligent and calculated. Deeply loyal to family. Sonny was the opposite. He was impulsive, hot headed, confrontational, Tom always knew Don or Michael would have his back.

Its this. Tom felt comfortable enough with Sonny to be candid.

Tom never disrespected Sonny when the Don was functioning.

All the “disrespect” happened when the family was floundering. But Tom lashing out at Sonny was more a matter of Tom not being a wartime consigliere than actual intended disrespect.

Sonny saw Vito order the death of Tom's father in one of the books. That's why he brought him home, and Vito let him stay.

Which book was that?

I only read the original and don't remember that. Maybe I got distracted by Lucy Mancini's vagina.

I don’t recall this at all, but maybe I missed it. Probably read the book a dozen times.

Tom was the consigliere.

It was literally HIS JOB to let Sonny know when he was fricking up.

I really don't think any book other that Puzo's original should be cited as official Canon. At minimum they should be Puzo novels, and not some of the fanfiction stories created decades later.

Yea but he still would never give the business like that to Vito or Michael.

That’s because it’s not in the book. It’s from another one, “The Family Corleone”. Good read, but I don’t know if it’s considered canon.

Apparently it's in Ed Falco's prequel novel The Family Corleone (2013), which I have not read. Like you, I read the original probably a dozen times and even used it as a topic in one of my Lit classes many moons ago.

Because Sonny had a different personality and different way of doing things than Vito or Michael (who were more similar in temperament).

Imo the line “you aren’t a wartime consigliere” is just a lie/excuse to make Tom feel better

The real reason he is pulled off of consigliere duty is because Micheal wanted him completely isolated from the business during the preparation of the 5 family slaughter to insulate him and the internal circle from implication of those and other crimes and allow him to represent the family as a lawyer in Utah. Tom’s skills are much more useful there than navigating a war the family wasn’t going to be in NY to worry about

So did I.

It’s literally one of the great works of American Lit.

UTAH?

No, it was Nevada, home of casinos and legalized gambling.

i think he absolutely would, given the right context. he never had to.

and he never really "gives the business" to Sonny anyways. he is very direct and blunt, but he always maintains professionalism.

i think Sonny and Tom respected each other entirely, but if ANYONE was disrespectful of the other, it was Sonny towards Tom.
